The Prelude: A Lion's Piercing Gaze

Before the leopard, there was the lion. As the sunset faded over Lake Nakuru, a pride rested near a dirt road. A young male rose and locked eyes with my lens—a moment of raw power and connection captured in my image, "The Stare." It was a powerful prelude, but the fever tree forest held a greater surprise.

The Setting: A Magical Afternoon in the Fever Tree Forest

Lake Nakuru’s Fever Tree Forest is a place of otherworldly beauty. I was on safari with a client, and my goal was to help her feel Africa, not just photograph it. We turned off the engine, listened to the birdsong, and soaked in the tranquillity. We even paused for a coffee break, simply to "be" in the heart of the forest. It was a magical, sensory experience.

From the Intensity of ‘The Stare’ to the Grace of the Fever Tree Leopard—Experience the Untamed Beauty of Lake Nakuru. Little did I know, the fever tree forest held an even greater surprise in store.
— Delaney

The Encounter: A Leopard Revealed

As we finished our refreshments, our guide spotted her: a young female leopard, resting on a distant branch. We held our breath. She moved, disappeared into the vegetation, and we repositioned, hoping to predict her path. Our patience was rewarded when she reappeared, climbing onto the massive bough of a towering fever tree. The scene was perfect.

As I moved quietly through the forest, my guide signaled me to stop. There, high on the bough of a towering fever tree, was a female leopard. Her sleek coat glistened in the dappled light filtering through the canopy. She was the epitome of grace—resting, then rising, her movements fluid and unhurried. In that moment, I knew I was witnessing something extraordinary.

The Shot: Capturing a Fleeting Moment

For a while, she rested. Then, as if attuned to my hopes, she stood up. She turned, walked down the trunk, and in a perfect, fleeting moment, she paused, flicked her tail, and glanced back. I pressed the shutter. I had captured the photograph of a lifetime.

The Art: Why Black and White

When editing this image, I knew it had to be black and white. Stripping away colour heightens the contrasts and textures—the intricate bark of the fever tree, the leopard’s sleek coat, and the delicate interplay of light and shadow. The result is a portrait that feels both intimate and timeless, a true celebration of nature’s quiet majesty.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year - Animal Portraits

Explore the Kalahari's raw beauty and the intense struggle for survival among vultures, captured vividly by an award-winning wildlife photographer. Perfect for print buyers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year

Animal Portraits – The Story Behind My Winning Photograph

The Kalahari Desert — vast, sun-scorched, and unforgiving — is where survival hangs by a thread. Life here ebbs and flows with the rains, and every creature lives on the edge. In this raw, untamed landscape, I captured the image that earned the title of Wildlife Photographer of the Year: Animal Portraits — a moment born of patience, instinct, and an unrelenting drive to tell nature’s deeper stories.

A Photographer’s Perspective

October marks a pivotal time in the Kalahari. As the last waterholes shrink under the weight of the season, wildlife converges in desperate anticipation. The air is thick with dust, heat, and tension. On one such day, as I crouched downwind of a scattered Eland carcass, I bore witness to a gathering few ever see.

It began with shadows overhead — White-backed Vultures, circling silently before descending like ghosts into the acacia. They were soon joined by rarer visitors: the powerful Lappet-faced Vultures, a regal Bateleur, a Tawny Eagle, and a striking Lanner Falcon. Over sixty raptors in total, each playing a role in this primal ritual.

Wildebeest trek along the dry Nossob River as the first rays of Sunshine rise above the red dunes …

The Vulture Ritual – Nature’s Hierarchy in Motion

What followed was not chaos, but choreography. The dominant birds asserted their place with wings spread wide, beaks snapping in flashes of aggression. Others waited, watching, their chance to feed dictated by status and timing. From behind the lens, I watched this hierarchy play out with intensity and purpose. It wasn’t just about food — it was about order, instinct, and the ancient laws of survival.

Through the Lens – Capturing the Moment

The midday light was harsh, the heat unrelenting. Still, I waited. These were not moments to rush. They demanded stillness, patience, and respect. Every frame I captured told part of a larger narrative — of life from death, of beauty found in brutality. From the skirmishes in the air to the silent watchfulness on the ground, the vultures revealed a side of nature that’s rarely seen and even more rarely understood.

A Privileged Perspective

This image, honoured by Wildlife Photographer of the Year, stands as more than just a portrait of a vulture. It is a symbol of the resilience and complexity of life in the Kalahari. It represents the privilege of bearing witness, of waiting long enough to see the unseen, and of sharing that truth through my work.

Capturing the Bull Elephant's Majesty

While he stands knee-deep in the waterhole, his eyes are closed as he dozes off. Now and again, this giant will swish his tail or fill his trunk to spray his massive frame with the cold grey liquid. He is big - 4 meters tall and over 4 tons in weight, he is the "Godfather" as I affectionately call this giant bull elephant. It is two in the afternoon, and the heat is relentless; over 30 degrees Celsius and no shade.

It's been the same routine for weeks now. The Godfather and his two shadow bull elephants arrive early afternoon and commandeer the waterhole. This is the only water for 20 sq km, and the animals have travelled all day to drink this life-saving water. But this "Trinity" will not give way or tolerate any other animal to drink in their presence.

"Raw Beauty of the Wild: African Wildlife Prints for Your Home"

A multitude of animals, springbok, gemsbok, zebra, ostrich, giraffe, and even lion have waited hours for the elephant's departure so that they may quench their thirst. From a photographer’s point of view, watching this action is like manna from the heavens‚ as there are attempted lion kills, sporadic jostles between herd males vying for dominance and occasional visits from a black rhino that appear like spectres as the sun fades below the horizon.

“Elevate Your Space with African Wildlife Art"

When the bull elephants do eventually leave, my heart skips a beat as I prepare for the shot that has eluded me for so long. In my mind's eye, I have visualised this scene many times. But for this to happen, I need them to walk towards me. But each day I groan inwardly and at another missed opportunity as the Trinity head off to dust bath in the opposite direction.

Today, however, will be different, as that morning, I had seen the three bulls feeding on a camel thorn tree away from their usual feeding place. Soon it will be time for them to depart. I leave, anticipating their route, and wait silently for them to come into view. I have checked and rechecked my equipment and decided upon the camera and lens combination. I now relax and control my breathing as they come into view.

"Witness the Wild: African Wildlife Art to Inspire and Delight"

The next ten minutes are the bliss of forgetfulness as I zone into the task at hand; only one moment stands out.

“He stands still before me in all his magnificence, raising his trunk filled with the red Kalahari dust. In one fluid movement, he sprays his forehead, and for one brief moment, he is covered in the magic of dust and light”

Introduction to the Black-Maned Lion

The Kalahari Black-Maned Lion is one of Africa's most iconic big cats, known for its striking appearance and powerful presence. This blog post explores the beauty and significance of these magnificent lions.

The Majesty of the Kalahari Black-Maned Lion

The black-maned lion's striking appearance and commanding presence make it a favourite subject for wildlife photographers. These lions are a symbol of the wild beauty and power of the African savannah.

Story Behind “Heart of Darkness”

Etosha National Park is famed for its Kalahari black-maned Lions, the biggest, tallest and most impressive Lions on the planet. On my arrival, I was told by a ranger that two big nomadic lions had chased and injured the Nebrownie pride male. They had taken over, the pride had scattered. I headed straight for the area and began my search for the lions. It didn’t take long before I saw a lioness with two cubs cross through the veld at a quick pace.

Capturing the Kalahari Black-Maned Lion

Photographing the black-maned lion requires skill and patience. The dramatic landscapes of the Kalahari provide the perfect setting for capturing these regal animals in their natural habitat.

When you are alone, and in the presence of a Kalahari black mane lion, a primaeval fear takes hold of you. Even though you tell yourself “you’re safe” you can not totally shake this feeling. It’s there lodged in the back of your mind. This majestic African big cat once was the bane of forefathers who lived on this land. They created kraals around their dwellings to keep their families and livestock safe. When you are a few meters from this killing machine, and his predatory eyes lock with yours, you will be chilled to the bone
— Extract from my field notes

Lioness and cubs on the move from a Male hunting them…

Minutes later, her unease and quick departure were understood. A Kalahari black-maned lion was in hot pursuit. He was one of the most majestic Kalahari black-maned Lions I had photographed. I knew instantly that this African Big Cat would make an impressive Fine-Art Print. I can only surmise that he was one of the two nomadic Kalahari black-maned lions.

This African Big Cat has murder on his mind as he hunts the female lioness and cubs. I followed for as far as I could. But then the lions went into the thick bush I will never know the real outcome. I assume the worst but hope for the best.

The Grey Ghosts of Etosha: Sculpted by Dust, Etched by Time

In Etosha’s blinding salt pans, Africa’s tallest elephants roam like ghosts. Follow Peter Delaney’s intimate encounter with these silent giants of dust and time.

There is a place where giants walk among ghosts—Etosha, a land of shimmering mirages, salt-laden winds, and time-weathered elephants. These are not just any elephants. They are the tallest in Africa, sculpted by scarcity, survival, and the whispers of the past. I had the privilege of walking in their footsteps, witnessing the resilience of one old bull who carried the weight of the desert upon his back.

“A formidable line of bull elephants crosses the shimmering heat of Etosha, ghostlike in the distance, bound by instinct, experience, and the call of survival.”

Grey Ghosts Of Etosha Trek Across the vast expanse of Etosha Pan in seach of food and water

Tracking the Giants

The day had begun in the golden hush of dawn, when the desert light paints the world in hues of fire and shadow. Seven bulls had crossed my path, moving with a slow, deliberate grace that defied their immense size. I followed, keeping my distance, drawn by the quiet rhythm of their journey. In Etosha, water is the pulse of life, and these seasoned travelers knew where to find it.

Hour by hour, they led me deeper into the vast, open expanse until we reached the edge of the Etosha Pan—a blinding white void that stretched beyond the horizon. Here, where the earth cracks like old parchment and the sky swallows sound, ancient springs still bubbled beneath the surface. The bulls knew this well. Without hesitation, they approached, extending their trunks to drink from the life-giving source hidden beneath the salt.

March of The Grey Ghosts | Bull Elephants

"When the wild speaks in black and white... are you listening?"

The Giant’s March by

Then, they appeared from the haze of heat and dust—seven bull elephants in single file, ghostlike in their silence. Towering, timeworn giants, each one carved by decades of desert life. Their hides were landscapes of cracked earth and old battles, tusks mismatched and weathered by use. They moved with a quiet, deliberate grace, conserving every ounce of energy under the unrelenting sun. No trumpeting, no chaos—just the steady, rhythmic march of survivors across the great salt pan. As they drew near, the air seemed to hold its breath. I sat motionless, heart pounding, witnessing a moment so rare and profound that it felt like the desert had offered me a gift.

mature bull elephants stride side by side across the cracked white surface of the Etosha Pan, their skin caked in dried calcrete mud, embodying silent strength and endurance.”

Grey Ghost | Old Bull Elephant

"Not just a photograph. A moment. A masterpiece. A memory of the wild—etched in black & white."

The Ritual of Dust and Time

After quenching their thirst, the bulls engaged in a ritual as old as their lineage. With practiced precision, they gathered the thick, alkaline mud and coated themselves, transforming into living statues of dust and stone. The Etosha Pan’s white clay served as both armor and identity, shielding them from the relentless sun and parasites. As it dried, it gave them their ghostly hue—a spectral presence in an already dreamlike world.

This old bull stood apart, his gaze lingering upon the horizon. Perhaps he had seen too many seasons, lost too many kin to time and hardship. Or perhaps he was merely content, knowing he had mastered this unforgiving land. As he moved past me, his vast frame eclipsed the dying sun, and for a fleeting moment, he was neither beast nor legend but something more—an echo of Africa’s untamed soul.

Grey Ghost | Hole In Ear | Bull Elephant

"An elephant never forgets. Neither will you."

Why Etosha’s Elephants Matter

Etosha’s elephants are not just survivors; they are sculptors of the land, shaping waterholes with their tusks, dispersing seeds that grow into sheltering trees, and carrying the wisdom of generations. But they are also vulnerable. Their tusks, often brittle from mineral deficiencies, remind us that even giants have weaknesses. Their migration routes, once endless, are now hemmed in by human expansion.

As photographers and storytellers, we must do more than capture their beauty—we must honor their story. Etosha’s elephants are more than just subjects for a lens; they are testaments to endurance, resilience, and the fragile balance between survival and loss.

And so, I leave you with this: If you ever find yourself on the edge of the Etosha Pan, where the land meets the sky and time stands still, watch closely. You may glimpse the Grey Ghosts—moving, vanishing, enduring. Just as they always have.

“A young bull elephant, dusted in pale clay, walks alone on the edge of Etosha Pan, trailing behind his elders on a relentless trek for food and water.”

“For those who see beauty in simplicity, and strength in stillness.”

As the festive season approaches, the search for the perfect gift begins. While most gifts bring a moment of joy, some carry the power to last, to inspire, and to truly transform. Giving the gift of art is one of those rare gestures, offering beauty and meaning that lingers far beyond the holidays. Art, particularly fine art photography, can uplift spaces, evoke powerful memories, and bring a sense of peace and mindfulness to any home.

Here’s why art makes such a meaningful gift and how it can enrich the lives of those who receive it.

Art Is Timeless and Unique

Unlike trends that come and go, art is a lasting piece of expression. Each photograph or painting is unique, often crafted with intention, vision, and love. When you gift a piece of art, you’re sharing something one-of-a-kind that will resonate with the recipient for years to come. Fine art photography, especially in black and white, captures moments and emotions in a way that transcends time. Each glance at the piece renews appreciation, adding a layer of personal meaning with each viewing.

The Power of Art in Mindfulness

In today’s fast-paced world, art offers a gentle invitation to pause and reflect. Studies show that art can inspire mindfulness, an awareness of the present moment that’s been linked to increased well-being, reduced stress, and greater peace of mind. Imagine gifting a photograph of a serene landscape or a majestic animal, a scene that invites quiet reflection. Art becomes more than just décor—it’s a window to stillness and presence, a reminder to slow down and reconnect with what matters most.

A Connection to Nature and the World Beyond

There’s something profound about connecting with the natural world through art. African wildlife photography, for instance, offers a glimpse into the wild beauty of nature, often capturing animals in moments of vulnerability, strength, and unity. Gifting wildlife art not only enhances any space but also fosters an appreciation for the incredible biodiversity of our planet. Each piece tells a story of a particular place, animal, or experience, grounding the viewer and strengthening a sense of wonder for the natural world.

Art That Becomes Part of Their Story

When you gift art, you’re not just giving a product; you’re giving an experience, a piece of something meaningful that becomes part of the recipient’s life. Art fills spaces with character and beauty, often creating a sense of identity and comfort within a home. Whether it’s a bold, captivating piece or a tranquil, minimalist work, each piece of art finds its own place in the home and, over time, becomes woven into the daily lives and stories of those who live with it.

A Gift with a Personal Touch

Gifting art shows thought and care, especially when chosen with the recipient in mind. It’s a truly personal gesture, reflecting an understanding of their taste and values. With the option to personalize through size, framing, or even a personal artist’s note, the gift of art becomes even more special. A beautiful piece on wildlife, for instance, brings an experience that is both visual and emotional, a thoughtful touch that transforms it from an ordinary gift into a treasure

How to Choose the Perfect Art Gift This Holiday Season

If you’re considering giving art this season, explore pieces that carry both aesthetic appeal and a personal connection. Think about the recipient’s interests—whether they find peace in nature, enjoy serene black-and-white photography, or feel inspired by animals’ strength and grace. Consider choosing pieces with a story, so that the recipient feels part of the journey behind each work.

Unlock the Secrets of Safari Photography: The Art of Seeing

Step into the Wild – Your African Safari Awaits

As I reflect on my journey as a wildlife photographer, especially when I review my images, a few truths emerge. In the beginning, my shots mostly featured either action or close-up portraits. While exciting, they often lacked deeper storytelling. The truth is, editing was still a challenge for me then—just as capturing those photographs had been. But what I've realized is that true wildlife photography goes beyond action and close-ups. It's about *seeing*—and there is no better place to refine that skill than on an African photographic safari.

When you're out in the wild, camera in hand, it's easy to fall into the rhythm of snapping action shots—thanks to advanced autofocus systems—or zooming in for detailed portraits. But as exciting as that can be, where's the art in pointing and shooting? When we take guests on safari, we teach them that great wildlife photography requires more than simply capturing a moment. It demands patience, creativity, and an eye for composition. It’s about crafting an image, not just taking a picture.

Safari Like Never Before – Adventure, Explore, Capture!

Wildlife photography is one of the most challenging forms of photography, and safaris are the perfect setting to hone this skill. On safari, you never know what you’ll encounter—the timing, place, light, and subject are all unpredictable. While action shots near a waterhole can be thrilling, the true magic happens when you’re quiet, observing, and composing an image that tells a story. And that’s what we teach on our safaris.

On safari in the Mara North and we happened upon a magnificent Tusker.. a fleeting but unforgettable encounter

Mastering Composition on Safari

Every great photograph begins with a solid composition. While guides like the rule of thirds can help, it’s your personal *vision* that will make your images unique and captivating. Safaris are an opportunity to develop this vision—to not just see, but to *really see*.

For instance, one of the composition techniques I love teaching on safari is using negative space. Imagine the vast open plains of Amboseli or Mara, where a lone elephant stands in the distance, framed by endless skies. Negative space allows your subject to breathe, creating a sense of calm and highlighting the majestic beauty of Africa’s wildlife.

We also explore the magic of light and texture. Early morning or late afternoon safaris are ideal for this, as the golden light casts long shadows and enhances the textures of an elephant’s wrinkled skin or the gentle curves of a sand dune. These are moments when we help guests experiment with patterns in the landscape, using clouds, trees, and distant mountains to enhance their compositions.

Seeing Beyond the Obvious

On safari, there’s a temptation to capture the big, dramatic moments—the chase, the kill, the perfect portrait. While those moments are special, true photographers learn to see beyond the obvious. Our goal is to help you refine your ability to anticipate moments, to capture the quiet, intimate interactions—whether it’s a lion cub nestled under its mother in the pouring rain or a zebra foal peeking over its shoulder.

Whether you're lying low to capture the striking silhouette of cheetahs on a mound in the savannah or aiming high to showcase the grandeur of a marula tree with a leopard gracefully walking along its branches, every shift in perspective reveals a new story. It’s these creative viewpoints that transform a standard shot into one that truly resonates emotionally with your audience.

Creating with Rhythm and Symmetry

Africa is full of patterns, from the stripes of a zebra to the rhythms of an elephant herd walking in unison. On our safaris, we teach you how to use natural symmetry and rhythm to create engaging images. For example, imagine photographing a line of elephants, slowly marching towards you and you wait for that one magical moment where the lead bull extends his ears to create the perfect shot. It’s not just about snapping a shot—it’s about seeing the balance and rhythm in the scene and waiting for the right moment to capture it..

 The Art of Patience

One of the most valuable lessons we emphasize during our safaris is the importance of patience. The most captivating wildlife photographs often come from waiting—waiting for the perfect light, the right moment, and that unforgettable interaction. Patience allows you to connect deeply with the environment, making space for truly magical encounters.

Take, for example, the story behind my photograph "The Stare." During a recent photo safari in Kenya’s Lake Nakuru, my client and I stumbled upon a lion pride resting by a dirt road. While we initially hoped for the iconic shot of lions perched in a Fever tree, we chose to wait, despite the fading daylight and no guarantees. Hours passed as the lions slept, but just as the sun began to set and raindrops started to fall, a young male lion stirred. He slowly rose, turned, and locked eyes with my lens. It was a brief yet powerful moment—his gaze full of intensity, a fleeting connection that I was fortunate to capture before he rejoined the pride.

 Your Vision

Ultimately, what we offer on our safaris with Delaney & Siggesson is not just a chance to photograph wildlife, but a chance to develop your vision as a photographer. The ‘art of seeing’ goes beyond technique—it’s about capturing the emotion of the moment, the spirit of the wild. We help you find that balance between technical precision and artistic expression, ensuring that your photographs tell the story of your unique journey through Africa’s wilderness.

If you want to take your wildlife photography to the next level, join us on safari. Let us guide you through the breathtaking landscapes of Africa, teaching you not just how to photograph its wildlife, but how to “see” it.

Because as one of my favourite songs says, “You don’t need eyes to see…you need vision.”

Kalahari Black-Maned Lions: A Story in Black and White

Kalahari Black-Maned Lions: A Story in Black and White

Capturing the Essence of Black and White Wildlife Photography

Marataba, a beautiful game reserve in the North West of South Africa, is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike. During a recent photographic safari with clients, I had the privilege of spending time with a coalition of pride males, Caesar and Cassius, Kalahari black-maned lions.

Encountering Caesar and Cassius: A Photographer's Dream

One of the highlights of the safari was the time spent with Caesar and Cassius. These Kalahari black-maned lions are a subspecies known for their power and impressive black manes, giving them an intimidating appearance. They can grow to a height of 1.46 meters and weigh up to 263 kilograms, perfectly adapted to the extreme climate and conditions of the Kalahari.

Black and White: The Perfect Medium for Wildlife Fine Art Photography

Black and white photography has a unique way of highlighting the contrasts and textures of nature. The absence of color brings forth a deeper focus on the subjects, revealing their true essence. For these black-maned lions, black and white was the perfect choice. It accentuated the stark contrast of their dark manes against the light savannah, creating images that are both powerful and evocative.

A Moment of Bonding: Capturing Intimate Behaviours

Caesar and Cassius were born at Marataba and had ruled the pride for many years, siring many young. When we found them, they had just finished eating a large zebra they had killed themselves. Soon after, their pride arrived to feed on the remains.

We followed Caesar and Cassius to a nearby waterhole, where they went to drink. It was there that I captured wonderful intimate moments between the two big males and one of their cubs. Moments like these, where Cassius sat in a regal pose with a cub posing in front, are rare and precious.

Awakening to the Call of the Wild

Slowly awakening, I find myself in darkness, the wind gently stirring the fabric of the tent. Despite the chill in the air, I'm snug beneath a thick duvet, with a comforting warmth emanating from the hot water bottle at my feet. Suddenly, the sound that stirred me repeats—a lion's roar pierces the night, accompanied by the eerie cackling of hyenas and the distinct bark of jackals.

At that moment, I'm momentarily disoriented, until the realization hits me—I'm in Kenya, on safari. I drift back into sleep, attempting to suppress my bubbling excitement for the adventures that await in the days and nights ahead. I awake again, this time to the familiar chime of my iPhone alarm.

Safari Preparation: Essentials for Wildlife Photography

The air is crisp as I slip into my robe and flick on the kettle. Being a coffee addict, I've brought some freshly roasted beans from South Africa and my trusty AeroPress. A steaming hot shower invigorates me, and I emerge ready for the day ahead, clad in jeans, a T-shirt, and a snug fleece—always bringing two on safari, one for chilly mornings in the vehicle and one for evenings by the campfire. With my travel mug brimming with aromatic coffee, I set off to rendezvous with my clients. Today marks the beginning of their photography safari with me.

Feel the Spirit of the Savanna: Fine Art for Your Walls

As dawn breaks, a gentle pink hue tints the horizon while our 4x4 rumbles along the rugged terrain. My driver, Steve, punctuates the journey with his customary humour, quipping about the "African Massage" as we bounce along. His joke elicits a smile from me and laughter from my guests.

Our ride, a 4x4 Land Cruiser Troopy, is the standard vehicle used by most safari operators—a reliable workhorse with ample space. Ours has been modified for photographers, featuring wide-open windows and removed centre seats to allow for optimal shooting positions. The vehicle's roof can be opened, providing elevated angles for capturing subjects, particularly wildlife in trees or hidden in tall grass. While Steve focuses on navigating the terrain, I keep my eyes peeled for potential photography subjects.

The Art of Photographing African Wildlife

The chilly wind nips at my face, but I'm grateful for my trusty beanie, which keeps my head warm. It doesn't take long before our first wildlife encounter—a pride of lions consisting of five females and a young male sporting the beginnings of a mane.

As we approach, maintaining a respectful distance of about 20 meters, I adhere to my philosophy of not crowding our subjects. Getting too close can trigger a fight-or-flight response, so I prefer a slow, cautious approach from a distance. Alternatively, if the animals are on the move, I opt to let them come to us. This approach ensures the wildlife remains relaxed, allowing us to photograph their natural behaviour.

Capturing Moments: From Lions to Giraffes

As we approached the lions, I noticed the wide-eyed wonder on my client's face, reminiscent of my own first safari experience. The thrill, the reverence, and the tingling anticipation as you come face to face with a killing machine. Whenever I work with my clients, my first goal is to calm them down and reduce their over-excitement. After all, capturing a sharp photograph requires a steady hand and a calm mind. With a few deep breaths and reassuring words, the familiar click of shutters fills the air.

From the Heart of Africa: Captivating Wildlife Prints for Your Home

As we rounded a corner that morning, one of my beloved trees came into view. Bathed in the soft morning light, with remnants of storm clouds lingering overhead, the Acacia tree stood majestically. However, what truly ignited my photography juices was the sight of tall figures in the distance, gracefully traversing through the long grasses of the savannah. Giraffe! The five Masai giraffes were still a few kilometres away, but I knew their destination—a tree close by. Deciding to position our 4x4 at a distance from the tree, I calculated that we'd need a 200mm focal length lens to capture the composition I envisioned. However, I also instructed my client to have his second camera ready with a wider lens as I had another composition in mind.

Safari Splendor: Breathtaking Art for Every Room

With nearly two decades of experience photographing African wildlife, I've become intimately acquainted with animal behaviour. This familiarity often aids me in capturing extraordinary moments. Anticipating the route of the giraffes and predicted that the lead giraffe would stop to assess us before continuing on his way. What, I hadn't anticipated was the near-perfect symmetry that unfolded as the other giraffes continued their graceful stride in the background.

My client was thrilled with the resulting composition, and so was I. As the giraffes proceeded toward the tree, it was the last giraffe that provided us with the quintessential African scene. Stretching its neck to reach the last dangling leaves, amidst the lush grass and billowing white clouds, a stunning photographic print was born.

It was a scrumptious breakfast, enjoyed amidst the expansive beauty of the Mara.

The journey to capture this image was filled with anticipation and moments of despair. For days, I scoured the vast landscape in search of this particular herd of over thirty elephants. Just as hope was waning, fortune smiled upon me on the final day of my self-drive photographic safari. Although I missed them drinking, my spirits lifted as I watched the elephants begin to move in my direction.

Seizing the moment, I positioned my vehicle parallel to the ridge and set up my camera, ensuring every detail was perfect. With the dust and sand creating an ethereal atmosphere, the elephants aligned perfectly along the ridge's spine. I pressed the shutter, immortalizing this fleeting moment in "Elephant Ridge." Capturing African Wildlife and Landscapes

Spiritual Symbolism

The baobab holds significant spiritual value in many African communities. It is commonly seen as a symbol of fertility, life, and positive energy. In some cultures, it is believed that spirits dwell within the baobab, offering protection and blessings to those who honour the tree. This spiritual connection often means that the tree is treated with great respect and reverence.

Reflecting on My Photography Journey

Over the past year, I’ve spent considerable time reflecting on the direction of my photography. I discovered an inconsistency in my portfolio—my landscape and wildlife images, while impressive individually, lacked cohesion as a collective.

Embracing Long-Term Projects

I embarked on long-term projects focusing on quiver trees and wild horses. As normalcy returns, I yearn to revisit my first love of African wildlife photography while embracing landscape photography.

I needed projects that would excite and challenge me, as well as projects that I had never done before. I've decided to do a photo study of Africa's megafauna and megaflora as my next long-term project. The iconic Baobab Tree and Elephant Tusker.

The Ancient One

Baobab trees can live for thousands of years. Some baobabs are believed to be over 6,000 years old, making them one of the oldest living trees on Earth

The Baobab Tree: A Landscape Photographer's Dream

I decided to undertake a photo study of Africa’s megafauna and megaflora, starting with the iconic baobab tree and elephant tusker. The baobab, often called the "Tree of Life," captivates my imagination like no other landscape subject.

The Allure of the Baobab Tree

Throughout my travels in Africa, I’ve heard countless stories about the baobab—known as the "upside-down tree," "elephant tree," and "devil’s tree." Each baobab is unique in girth, height, and shape, found in stunning landscapes from Botswana's salt pans to Uganda's Mountains of the Moon.

Baobabs are revered or feared by many African tribes. Some believe these trees are cursed or house ancestral spirits, while others think they move at night and remain motionless by day. This project excites and challenges me as a landscape photographer.

Throughout Africa the baobab is venerated or regarded with awe by most indigenous
people; some even consider it bewitched. Its huge and often grotesque shape has
caused much speculation about how and why it arrived on Earth. The absence of
natural regeneration nowadays has even led some Africans to believe that the
baobab is the result of spontaneous generation and appeared by magic overnight.

Beginning My Baobab and Tusker Project

My first trip for this project included photographing both baobabs and tuskers. Combining these subjects allowed me to start both projects earnestly and whet my appetite for the future.

Excerpt from My Notes

"Discovering a magnificent baobab standing alone in a parched landscape, I wondered about its ancient history. Baobabs can live for thousands of years. How many people and animals have sought shelter under its branches or eaten its fruit to survive? Scars from elephants ripping away bark for water added to its mystical aura. Despite challenges, this iconic baobab thrives."

Others believe the trees possess souls or are inhabited by ancestral spirits. Some
even believe that the trees walk about at night but have to stay in one place during
the day

Tree of Life

Tree of Life

The baobab tree is revered across many African cultures and is often referred to as the "Tree of Life." This nickname is well-deserved as the baobab provides vital resources such as food, water, and shelter. Its leaves, bark, and fruit are used in traditional medicine, making it an essential part of the ecosystem and local livelihoods.

The thrill of Photographing Elephant Tuskers

For my wildlife photography, I sought a subject that would satisfy my adrenaline cravings. Capturing Africa’s largest mammal, the elephant tusker is both exhilarating and daunting.

The Rarity of Tusker Elephants

Tusker elephants, with their impressive ivory tusks, are rare. Fewer than 30 remain in Southern Africa. To qualify as a tusker, an elephant's tusks must weigh about 45 kg each and be around 2 meters long. I also aim to identify "emerging tuskers"—elephants with tusks at least 1.5 meters long.

Emerging Tusker Bull Elephants Under Shade of Tree

Symbols of Strength and Wisdom: In many African cultures, tusker elephants are seen as symbols of strength, wisdom, and endurance. Their impressive size and longevity contribute to their status as powerful totems in various traditional beliefs.

The Search for Tuskers

After three days and countless kilometres, I hadn’t found a tusker. However, I did encounter two magnificent emerging tuskers. Watching them dig for water in a dry riverbed was a sight to behold. Predicting their movements, I captured beautiful environmental portraits of these emerging giants.

Genetics: Only a small percentage of African elephants are born with the genetic potential to become tuskers. This makes them rare and highly valued within elephant populations.

Respect and Reverence: Communities that live close to tusker populations often hold these elephants in high regard. There are traditional practices and taboos designed to show respect and ensure the harmonious coexistence of humans and elephants. This reverence is sometimes reflected in local customs and rituals.

The Joy of Wildlife Photography

Over the next few days, I photographed numerous bull elephants with impressive tusks and a few baobabs. Immersed in nature, I felt recharged and content. On my last day, I discovered a beautiful oasis—a perfect setting for a coffee break. As I sipped my coffee, I watched a variety of wildlife come and go.

A Close Encounter with a Tusker

"Suddenly, I noticed a blurry image approaching—a massive bull elephant with heavy tusks. Despite challenging photographic conditions, I captured images of my first and only tusker on this trip. This experience confirmed my love for challenging projects and has me planning my next adventure to continue my baobab and tusker studies."

Kambaku | Old Bull Elephant | Canvas Prints

Tuskers are at significant risk due to poaching, as their large tusks are highly sought after in the illegal ivory trade.

Age and Maturity: The growth of a tusker's large tusks takes many years. These elephants are typically older and have lived through many seasons, which contributes to their impressive size and the grandeur of their tusks. Their age often makes them key members of their herds, providing leadership and stability.

First Encounter with Totti Male Chimpanzee

I can still vividly remember my first encounter with these human-like creatures. Standing alone face to face with an alpha male chimpanzee meters away was exciting and unnerving. I was acutely aware of the strength and power of these primates. The piercing eyes of the chimpanzee chilled me to the bone. But I am getting ahead of myself.

I'm Peter Delaney, a wildlife photographer. I recently spent a week in Uganda to photograph mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. The assignment focused on the impact of conservation tourism on local communities and wildlife, offering a chance to capture images of mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, whose habitats are increasingly threatened.

This exquisite print on fine art paper offers not just a visual experience, but a tactile connection to one of nature's most intelligent and captivating creatures.

Photographing Chimpanzees in Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park, located in southern Uganda, spans 766 square kilometres and sits 1,600 meters above sea level. It's one of Africa's richest ecosystems, home to 13 primate species, including chimpanzees, and a variety of other wildlife such as forest elephants, buffalos, and leopards.

Essential Gear for Rainforest Photography

Navigating the wet, humid conditions of the rainforest required lightweight, weather-sealed camera gear and durable hiking apparel. Good waterproof boots and lightweight gloves were crucial for trekking through the dense undergrowth.

The Challenge of Capturing the Perfect Shot

Photographing in the dim light of the rainforest with splashes of sunlight was challenging. With no tripods, monopods, or flash allowed, a good camera strap was essential for keeping the camera ready while trekking through the dense forest.

There are no hiking paths or trails through these ancient forests. Trekking was slow as we walked around giant Teak trees or climbing over fallen hardwoods that now fed fungi and was now home to snakes, frogs, ants and every other creepy-crawly your imagination can conjure up. I was beginning to get a foreboding sense of doom. Finding chimpanzees even with an expert ranger does not guarantee a sighting of these great apes. We had hiked through the dense forest for hours and only occasionally catching a fleeting glimpse of chimpanzees high in the canopy. Then in a flash, they were gone. I had not raised my camera to my eye once. I was getting increasingly anxious as the minutes ticked by. I had a plane to catch later that day. I had only an hour or so left before I needed to depart.

Then without warning a chimpanzee catapulted to the ground with an almighty thud. All around me felt like a battalion of paratroopers descending from the heavens to attack me. Thud after thud. Then a shout from the ranger, “they are hunting” The cacophony of deafening screams as chimpanzees ran on the ground and flew through the trees. We followed as fast as we could but it was all over within a few minutes and then an eerie silence descended. To this day those few minutes are just a blur of shapes and terrifying screams. I will never know if some unfortunate monkey suffered a cruel fate.

Trekking Through the Dense Forest

The forest had no hiking paths or trails, making trekking slow and challenging. We hiked for hours, occasionally glimpsing chimpanzees in the canopy, but they quickly disappeared. Time was running out, and anxiety grew as I had a plane to catch later that day.

The canvas’s rich, matte finish combined with the sophisticated floating frame creates a striking centrepiece that brings the intelligence and resilience of one of nature's most captivating creatures into any space.

The Unforgettable Encounter

Suddenly, a chimpanzee catapulted to the ground, followed by a cacophony of deafening screams as they hunted. The chaotic scene ended in eerie silence. Deciding to take a gamble, I moved away from the group with the ranger's permission to search for chimpanzees on my own.

While resting on a fallen log, I felt piercing eyes watching me. I spotted Totti, an alpha male, displaying unexpected behaviour as he tried to woo a female chimpanzee. His forlorn expression as he lay back with arms outstretched was a perfect photographic moment. I composed the shot and captured what would become the award-winning black and white fine art print, "Chimpanzee Dreaming."

There is something magical and beautiful when you observe elephants. It touches your soul and pulls at your heartstrings. A Day on Safari: The Journey Begins

It is a hot and sticky day, as we bumble along the potholed track, everyone is relaxed, it is our third day of safari, and the everyday stress that had accompanied us here has slipped away like a shadow in the midday sun.

Seeking the Perfect Shot

Magnificent cumulonimbus clouds tower above us, the smell of rain is in the air, and a welcome whisper of cool wind washes over us. The air becomes charged with excitement as the first rumbles of the afternoon's storm permeate throughout the sanctuary.

My eyes are composing pictures everywhere I look, trying to find something of interest to share with my clients.

In the distance, I see dark chocolate shapes of elephants — a small herd ambling along in a line, grazing.  As we got closer, I realised the elephants had struck a rich vein of sweet green grass by the roadside.

Elephant matriarchs are the cornerstone of their families. Their knowledge of migration routes, water sources, and survival strategies is passed down through generations, ensuring the continuity of their herds.

The Matriarch | African Elephant | Canvas Prints

Transform your space with timeless black and white art, telling Africa's untamed story

The Matriarch Portrait is a powerful representation of the strength and wisdom of elephant matriarchs. These majestic leaders play a crucial role in the survival and cohesion of their herds.

Preparing for the Encounter

I put my hand on Benson's arm, slow down and stop here, I say. He replied we are still away from the elephants?

I told my guests to put on a shorter focal length lens on their cameras.

They too, queried my decision to stop. I said, trust me. We waited patiently. The elephants continued to stroll towards us, silently on their giant cushion-padded feet.

Respecting the Comfort Zone

My reasoning is simple, wildlife-like people have a comfort zone; if you enter that zone without permission, a flight or a fight situation occurs. By stopping away from the elephants, they are entering our comfort zone; the elephants are well aware of our presence, if we are quiet and relaxed, they will walk calmly towards and pass us, allowing us to capture unique photographs.

I had purposely stopped in a natural depression in the road, knowing that if the elephants continued on their course, we would be eye to eye with them which always make for a more engaging portrait.

The Joy of Observation

You could almost sense their joy as they grabbed at tufts of grass, expertly knocking off the loose soil on the inside of their trunk before eating the luscious vegetation.

I hadn't noticed her at first as she had her back to us, My chest began to beat faster, my senses were heightened, and excitement washed over me. I had always wanted to photograph an elephant with long tusks, and I always assumed it would be a male.

The Matriarch | Acrylic Glass Prints

Experience Africa's magic with black and white art that enriches your space

The Majestic Matriarch

The Matriarch had the longest tusks I had ever seen on a female elephant. It is the most amazing and humbling experience to be in such proximity to an elephant herd. The elephants were all around us, relaxed, and so were we.  The moment I had hoped for, silently began to unfold in front of me, I was worried about not having enough focal length, so I turned the camera to portrait and breathed a sigh of relief — just enough room within the frame.

Capturing the Perfect Shot

The Matriarch turned towards me, eye to eye, as she reached for another bunch of grass. One of my guests, let a small yelp of delight as a baby elephant reached their trunk towards her. The Matriarch reacted by extending ears; at that moment all the elements needed to create a compelling portrait came together, the Matriarch was front on, eye to eye, ears out, trunk slightly curled at the tip, I held my breath, and pressed the shutter. I breathed a sigh of both relief and joy.

Wild Horses of the Namib Desert: Capturing Majestic Beauty

The wild horses of the Namib Desert, also known as the Namib Desert horses or the Garub horses, have a fascinating and somewhat mysterious origin. While there is no definitive explanation for how they came to inhabit this arid region, several theories and legends have emerged over the years:

Wild Stallion Of The Namib Desert | Canvas Prints

Some Stories Suggest That The Wild Horses Originated From Horses Used By German Or South African Military Forces During World War I

One theory suggests that the wild horses are descendants of horses that survived shipwrecks along the Namibian coast during the colonial era. It is believed that European ships travelling along the treacherous Skeleton Coast may have been wrecked, leading to horses being stranded and left to roam the desert.

Some stories suggest that the wild horses originated from horses used by German or South African military forces during World War I. It is believed that these horses were released or abandoned after the war, eventually becoming feral and establishing herds in the desert. Regardless, these resilient horses' existence continues to captivate photographers and visitors alike.
