When you are alone, and in the presence of a Kalahari black-maned lion, a primaeval fear takes hold.
Even though you tell yourself "you're safe", you cannot entirely shake the feeling. It's there, lodged in the back of your mind.
This majestic African big cat was once the bane of the forefathers who lived on this land. They built kraals around their dwellings to keep their families and livestock safe.

There are encounters in the wild that stay with you long after they end.
This was one of them.
The Kalahari black-maned lion is one of Africa's most iconic big cats — known for its striking appearance and commanding presence. Etosha is famed for its lions, among the biggest, tallest, and most impressive on the planet.
Heart of Darkness captures a moment with one such lion — a moment that will leave you feeling both exhilarated and unnerved.
This lion has murder on his mind. He is hunting a female and cubs from another pride.
Just minutes before, I had watched an anxious mother and her cubs run towards me and pass me by — not realising the danger they were in. It wasn't until the male came into view that I understood why they were in such a hurry.
I followed as far as I could, photographing him as he walked after the lioness and cubs. He never rushed. Never needed to.
For over an hour, I waited as he moved through the landscape, until finally he stopped and looked directly into the lens. Unbroken. Unreadable. Entirely present.
In that moment, the Kalahari seemed to fall silent.
As you gaze into his intense eyes, you feel the fear our forefathers once experienced in the presence of these creatures. His predatory gaze is a chilling reminder of the danger that once threatened their families and livestock.
In black and white, the image becomes something deeper. The darkness of his mane, the intensity in his gaze, the stillness surrounding him, all held in quiet tension.
