The Remains: A Trilogy

ZANSHIN | The Mind That Remains

KARENO | The Withered Field

KUCHIKI NO TAMASHII | The Soul of the Withered Tree

Three photographs. Three landscapes. One underlying idea.
A small body of work developed over the past year, exploring what remains when movement, life and time have passed.

The trilogy is a quiet study of presence, absence and memory, presented entirely in monochrome.

ZANSHIN | 残心

The Mind That Remains

A skeletal tree stands against a white sky like a stroke of black calligraphy. As I raised my camera, a small raptor crossed the branches, its wings caught mid-flight. In that split second, I saw the tension between stillness and motion—a lingering awareness that persists even after the moment has passed.

KARENO | 枯野

The Withered Field

Five trees stand clumped together at the crest of a distant hill beneath gathering storm clouds. Below them, a field lies deeply furrowed by farming—its linear strokes pulling the eye upward like a slow procession toward the horizon. These trees were once left to shade sheep. Now they stand as quiet remnants of a purpose that has long since passed.

KUCHIKI NO TAMASHII | 朽ち木の魂

The Soul of the Withered Tree

A solitary Quiver Tree stands in the vast, desolate landscape of the Northern Cape. Its massive trunk is shaped like the face of an old man, its shortened branches reaching outward into an empty, cloudless sky. Among the San people, it is believed that the soul of a dying man can become trapped within such a tree. Standing before it, I felt not just a dying form, but something that might still be holding a life within it.
