KARENO — The Remains | The Story
This print was born from a quiet fascination with the marks humans leave on the earth. High on a distant hill, five trees stood clumped together under a heavy, gathering storm. Below them, the field had been deeply furrowed by farming, the linear strokes pulling the eye upward, like a slow procession toward the horizon.
Those trees, I later learned, were left there intentionally. They once provided shade for sheep. Now they are quiet remnants of an older purpose, standing watch over a landscape reshaped by labour and time.
I titled this print Kareno, a Japanese literary word for a desolate, withered field, a recurring image in classical poetry that speaks to the passing of seasons and what remains after life has moved on.
I hope the viewer feels the weight of that quiet history, the gathering storm, and the quiet dignity of those few surviving trees.
