ZANSHIN — The Remains | The Story
I am drawn to landscapes that speak in silence. My work is a study in black and white minimalism — stripping away color to reveal the raw architecture of form, shadow, and negative space. Influenced by the aesthetic of Japanese ink-wash painting (sumi-e) and the Zen concept of ma (the meaningful space between things), I seek out moments where stillness and motion, life and decay, exist in quiet tension.
I was walking through a sparse, winter-drenched landscape when this skeletal tree stopped me mid-stride. It was not just a dead tree; it was a stroke of calligraphy written against the white sky — elegant, severe, and utterly final. Just as I raised my camera, a small raptor broke the silence, its wings caught mid-flap as it passed the bare branches.
I titled this piece Zanshin, a Japanese martial and Zen term meaning "the mind that remains" — the state of acute, lingering awareness that persists after an action is complete. In that fraction of a second, the frozen stillness of the tree and the fleeting motion of the bird met. I wanted the viewer to feel that suspended breath: the tension between what has ended and what is still alive.
