A lioness and her cubs raced past me, unaware of what followed. Moments later, a black-maned lion emerged — gaze locked, stalking with purpose. I followed as far as I could. I will never know the outcome.

Into the Wild — Heart of Darkness | The Story

There are encounters in the wild that stay with you long after they end.

This was one of them.

Moments earlier, a lioness and her cubs had moved quickly through the Kalahari, unsettled by something unseen. Then he appeared. A black-maned lion emerging from shadow and dust, moving with quiet certainty.

He never rushed. Never needed to.

For over an hour, I waited as he moved through the landscape, until finally he stopped and looked directly into the lens. Unbroken. Unreadable. Entirely present.

In that moment, the Kalahari seemed to fall silent.

In black and white, the image becomes something deeper. The darkness of his mane, the intensity in his gaze, the stillness surrounding him, all held in quiet tension.

This is not simply a portrait of a lion.

It is a portrait of presence.

He emerged from the darkness, and the silence stood still.

Collector Stories

Reflections from collectors who have welcomed Peter Delaney's artwork into their homes around the world.

"

After some delay, I finally had 'Bonds of Love' framed and placed on my bedroom wall, a gift from my husband for our 50th wedding anniversary. He passed away not long after, and two years on, this photograph continues to comfort me. It is the first thing I see every morning, and it gladdens my heart.

— Sally, Johannesburg

"

This is not a photograph hanging on a wall. It is a window into something vast and unhurried.

Queen of the Mara has occupied a central place in our living room since 2020. It helped us feel connected to the world at a time when we... weren't.
