Wider Than the Eye Can See. Wilder Than You Can Imagine
What Makes Panoramic Wildlife Prints So Powerful?
Panoramic wildlife photography creates a dramatic impact that is unparalleled in traditional formats. The extended width not only captures a broader view of the landscape but also draws the viewer’s eye across the entire image, engaging them in the scene. The expansive canvas brings an intimate connection with nature, whether it's a herd of elephants roaming across a vast savanna or a lion in full stride across the plains. Panoramic prints enhance the story of the wild, capturing moments in their raw, undisturbed glory, and bringing those moments to life in your home or office.

Behind the Lens: How I Capture Ultra-Wide Moments in the Wild
Capturing these ultra-wide moments in the wild requires patience, precision, and an understanding of how the scene will translate into a wide-format print. Using specialised equipment and an artistic eye, I focus on both the environment and its inhabitants. The goal is to capture not just an image, but the energy and narrative of the moment. This process begins in the heart of Africa, where I immerse myself in the wild landscapes to ensure every detail, from the smallest textures of the grass to the majestic posture of the animal—is perfectly composed for an ultra-wide composition.

Why Collectors Love Panos: Storytelling at Scale
For art collectors, panoramic wildlife prints offer a unique form of storytelling. These images don’t just capture a moment; they weave a narrative. The longer aspect ratio allows for a richer storytelling experience, where animals and landscapes interact across an extended canvas. For those who appreciate both art and nature, panoramic prints create an emotional connection to the wild. They’re not just wall decor—they’re a conversation piece, inviting the viewer to pause, reflect, and feel part of the scene.

Elevate Your NYC Space with Safari Wall Art
In New York’s steel-and-glass jungle, a quiet design trend is taking hold: African safari wall art. Peter Delaney’s black-and-white wildlife photography—majestic lions, serene elephants—brings raw beauty and calm to urban interiors. These museum-quality prints transform city homes into soulful sanctuaries, offering a bold statement and a reconnection with nature.
In the heart of New York City’s concrete landscape, where space is a luxury and serenity is rare, bold safari wall art emerges as a transformative design secret. For Manhattan lofts, Brooklyn brownstones, and Tribeca penthouses, archival black and white wildlife photography bridges the gap between urban grit and untamed elegance, offering a daily escape into Africa’s wild soul.
“Urban Giant" | Amboseli Old Tusker
"Command your space with the quiet power of Africa’s giants. This archival print turns living rooms into landscapes."
African Wildlife Art: NYC’s Secret to Sophisticated Interiors
African wildlife art captures the essence of a continent where lions reign, elephants roam, and zebras dance across savannas. In NYC apartments, these pieces transcend décor—they become portals to adventure. Museum-quality safari prints, like Peter Delaney’s limited editions, blend raw natural beauty with the refined aesthetics of modern design, turning cramped spaces into curated sanctuaries.
Skyward Elegance
"Stretch beyond skyscrapers. A giraffe’s grace meets Manhattan’s skyline in monochrome poetry."
Lion Wall Art: Commanding Focal Points for NYC Living Rooms
Lions, the iconic “kings of the jungle,” symbolise unyielding power. A striking black and white lion portrait—such as The Lion’s Gaze from Delaney’s Maasai Mara collection—anchors a living room with quiet authority. Its monochrome tones harmonise with steel-and-glass interiors, while its subject’s resilience mirrors the tenacity of New Yorkers.

"The King’s Gaze"
"Rule your concrete kingdom. This lion’s stare is the only crown a NYC apartment needs."
Elephant Wall Art: Urban Tranquillity in Black and White
Elephants embody wisdom and calm, an antidote to the city’s chaos. Displaying archival elephant prints, like Elephant Ridge, in entryways or bedrooms fosters serenity. The gentle giants’ textured hides and soulful eyes soften minimalist spaces, proving that even in NYC, nature’s quiet giants can thrive.

"In a city that never sleeps, let their quiet intimacy whisper: ‘Here, you belong.’"
Giraffe Wall Art: Elevating Ceilings, Expanding Perspectives
With their towering grace, Giraffes inspire awe and upward focus—a boon for low-ceilinged apartments. A vertical giraffe photograph in a hallway or office elongates spaces visually, while its subject’s quiet elegance whispers: Even in confinement, reach higher.
Zebra Wall Art: Bold Contrast for Modern NYC Apartments
Zebras, with their hypnotic stripes, symbolise balance—a concept foreign to city life. A large-format zebra print above a mid-century sofa or dining nook injects dynamic contrast. Its monochrome palette echoes NYC’s architectural rhythm while reminding viewers of nature’s perfect asymmetry.
"Stripes of Serenity"
Chaos meets calm. A zebra family’s harmony mirrors the balance every New Yorker craves."
From Safari to Skyline: Africa’s Legacy in NYC Homes
For those who’ve traversed the Serengeti or tracked rhinos in Namibia, safari wall art is more than décor—it’s a relic of transformation. Peter Delaney’s signed open-edition prints immortalise moments like a leopard’s hunt or a herd’s migration, rekindling campfire memories under the city’s fluorescent glow.
These pieces are aspirational for the uninitiated—a promise of adventures yet to come. As one Chelsea collector noted:
“Every morning, Delaney’s lion reminds me: If he can rule the Mara, I can conquer Wall Street.”
"Legacy of Kinship"
"Where NYC’s pace fades, a matriarch’s wisdom reigns. Let their bond anchor your sanctuary."
Biophilic Design: How Safari Art Reduces Urban Stress
Studies reveal that nature-inspired art lowers cortisol levels by 15% (Journal of Environmental Psychology, 2022). In NYC, where concrete dominates, black and white wildlife photography offers a lifeline:
A lion’s stare replaces the screen glare.
An elephant’s wrinkles mask drywall cracks.
A zebra’s stripes offset subway grime.
For therapists, it’s “visual therapy.” For designers, it’s biophilic alchemy—transposing the wild into the wired. calm amid urban life.

Curate Your Urban Oasis: Safari Art for NYC Living
Integrating bold safari wall art into your New York apartment isn’t just design—it’s rebellion. These pieces declare against sirens, deadlines, and cramped commutes: Here, the wild still wins.

The Stare: A Prelude to Magic
As the golden hues of sunset faded over Lake Nakuru, the air grew heavy with the promise of rain. A pride of lions rested along a dirt road, their earthy tones blending effortlessly with the ochre landscape.
I had envisioned capturing lions draped across fever tree branches, their majestic forms framed by the forest’s golden canopy. But nature, as always, had other plans.
In that quiet moment, a young male rose, his piercing eyes locking with mine through the lens. For an instant, predator and observer shared a connection—an unspoken exchange of power, grace, and vulnerability. This fleeting moment, captured in my image “The Stare,” is a testament to the untamed beauty of the wild, where every encounter holds the potential to leave us in awe.
Little did I know, this was only the beginning. The fever tree forest, just a short distance away, held an even greater surprise in store.

The Story: A Moment of Magic in the Fever Tree Forest
Lake Nakuru’s Fever Tree Forest is a place of otherworldly beauty. The golden hues of the fever trees, the soft rustle of leaves, and the occasional call of a distant bird create an almost ethereal atmosphere. It’s a place where time seems to stand still, and nature’s most elusive creatures reveal themselves in rare, fleeting moments.
This was my first visit, and I instantly fell in love. While not as well-known as Kenya’s iconic reserves like the Maasai Mara, Amboseli, or Samburu, this hidden gem is home to four Big Five and borders a well-established city. Though the forest is not vast, it holds an enchanting allure that captivates the soul.
I was on safari with a client, and my goal was not only to provide her with a great photographic experience but also to help her truly feel the essence of Africa. As photographers, we often spend so much time behind the lens that we forget to savor the moment. That afternoon, as we ambled through the forest in search of the famous Rothschild’s giraffe, I encouraged her to put the camera down and let the experience wash over her senses.
We stopped frequently, turning off the engine to eliminate camera shake and to fully absorb the sounds of the forest. Birdsong filled the air—this time of year, the forest is a birder’s paradise. Baboons, antelope, buffalo, giraffe, and even rhinos made appearances, each adding to the symphony of life around us. At one point, I suggested we take a short coffee break and simply “be” in the heart of the forest. It was magical—the cool, scented air, the symphony of sounds, and the profound sense of tranquility. We sat in silence, soaking it all in.
Step Into the Forest: A One-Minute Escape
Immerse yourself in the serene magic of Lake Nakuru’s fever tree forest through this short, one-minute video I created using iPhone footage. It captures an unforgettable afternoon—driving through the forest, sunlight dancing through the canopy, and the peaceful moments when we turned off the engine to simply listen to the symphony of the wild.
Watch as Rothschild’s giraffes glide gracefully through the trees, their golden coats blending with the bark of the fever trees. Hear the melody of birdsong, the rustling leaves, and the distant calls of baboons. It’s a quiet glimpse into the hidden wonders of Africa.
Let this video be a reminder to pause, breathe deeply, and soak in the natural beauty that surrounds us.
May it inspire you to embrace the wild moments that make life extraordinary.

The Encounter: Capturing Grace
As we finished our refreshments, our driver scanned the area with his binoculars and broke into a wide smile. A young female leopard lay on the branch of a tree a short distance away. We gasped in awe, though she was too far for a good photograph. But the photography gods were smiling on us that day. She got up, walked down the branch, and disappeared into the dense vegetation.
I decided to predict her path, and we repositioned ourselves. Soon, she reappeared, this time closer to us. We waited patiently, allowing her to cross and keeping a respectful distance. As we followed her, we rounded a corner and found her perched on the massive bow of a huge fever tree. The scene was perfect—close enough for a great shot but not so close as to disturb her. The background was sublime, with towering fever trees framing the image.
Witness the Grace: A Leopard’s Moment in the Fever Tree Forest
Step into the heart of Lake Nakuru’s fever tree forest with this short, one-minute video captured on my iPhone. It brings to life the exact moment I photographed the young female leopard—a fleeting instance of grace and beauty that I’ll never forget.
Watch as she moves with effortless elegance along the branch of a towering fever tree, her sleek coat glistening in the dappled light. The video captures her pause, the flick of her tail, and the quiet intensity of her gaze—a moment that epitomizes the wild’s quiet majesty.
Listen to the sounds of the forest in the background: the rustle of leaves, the distant calls of birds, and the hum of life that fills this magical place. It’s a rare glimpse into the world of one of Africa’s most elusive creatures.
Let this video remind you of the beauty of patience, the thrill of the unexpected, and the profound connection we share with the natural world.

As I moved quietly through the forest, my guide signaled me to stop. There, high on the bough of a towering fever tree, was a female leopard. Her sleek coat glistened in the dappled light filtering through the canopy. She was the epitome of grace—resting, then rising, her movements fluid and unhurried. In that moment, I knew I was witnessing something extraordinary.
For a while, she sat still, and we captured shots of her resting. Our driver used my phone to record video, and it felt as though she was attuned to my thoughts. For no apparent reason, she stood up, turned around, and walked down the trunk of the tree.
Then, in a fleeting moment, she turned slowly, flicked her tail, and I captured the photograph of a lifetime. She then walked back and settled down once more.
The Print A Timeless Portrait
This image, now shortlisted for the Sony World Photography Awards, is more than just a photograph—it’s a story. It’s the story of a magical afternoon in the fever tree forest, the patience and anticipation of waiting for the perfect moment, and the sheer joy of witnessing one of Africa’s most elusive creatures in her natural habitat.
When editing this image, I knew it had to be black and white.
“Stripping away color enhances the contrasts and textures—the intricate bark of the fever tree, the leopard’s sleek coat, and the interplay of light and shadow. The result is a portrait that feels both intimate and timeless, a celebration of nature’s quiet majesty.”

From the towering dunes of Namibia to the storm-laden skies of South Africa, my fine art prints capture the essence of these wild places. Whether in striking black and white or vibrant color, each piece is designed to transform your space, bringing the raw beauty of Africa into your home.
““Africa’s landscapes are a masterclass in contrasts—where light dances with shadow, and vibrant hues give way to timeless black and white. As a fine art photographer, I’ve always been drawn to these contrasts, not just in the land itself but in how they can be captured through the lens.””
"The Ancient One: A Timeless Baobab"
"A black-and-white fine art photograph of an ancient Baobab tree, standing tall and majestic against a stark, textured landscape. The tree’s gnarled branches and rugged trunk are highlighted in dramatic contrast, evoking a sense of timelessness and resilience."
"African Fine Art Landscapes in Black and White and Colour"
Africa is a land of contrasts—where vast deserts meet lush savannas, and towering dunes give way to dramatic stormscapes. As a fine art photographer, I’ve always been drawn to these contrasts, not just in the landscapes themselves but in how they can be captured through different mediums.
In this blog, I’ll take you on a journey through some of my favorite African landscapes, from the haunting beauty of Namibia’s Deadvlei to the raw power of a Karoo storm. Each piece is a celebration of nature’s artistry, whether in the timeless elegance of black and white or the vibrant energy of colour.
Landscape Wall Art | Deadvlei | Timeless Echoes
As you explore this profound landscape, envision how the vision of nature’s artistry at Deadvlei can be translated into your home. The serene balance of colours and forms resonates deeply, making it an ideal subject for a striking art piece. Transform your living environment with artwork that encapsulates the spirit of Deadvlei, allowing its haunting beauty to infuse your space with tranquillity and wonder.
Namibia: A Land of Timeless Beauty
Deadvlei and Sossusvlei are two of Namibia’s most iconic desert landscapes, drawing photographers and adventurers from around the world. Their surreal beauty is like no other. Picture a vast expanse of cracked white clay, surrounded by towering, reddish-brown dunes that seem to stretch endlessly towards the sky. The stark contrast of the blackened, dead camelthorn trees scattered across the landscape creates an almost otherworldly scene—a place where time seems to stand still. These ancient trees, some over 900 years old, have been preserved by the arid conditions, creating a haunting beauty that feels both desolate and mesmerizing.
Deadvlei Landscape Wall Art | The Desert Warriors
“Honor the passage of time with 'The Desert Warriors ' This striking black-and-white print captures the resilience and fragility of nature in one timeless composition. Bring this evocative piece into your home today."
In my color prints of Deadvlei and Sossusvlei, I’ve worked to capture the full vibrancy and richness of the desert. The deep reds and oranges of the dunes are juxtaposed against the bright white of the clay pan, with the sharp black lines of the dead trees creating a striking contrast. These color prints bring out the full spectrum of the desert’s ever-changing landscape, from the soft golden light at dawn to the intense heat of midday. The vibrant hues evoke a sense of awe, showcasing the harsh yet stunning beauty of these natural wonders.
Deadvlei | Reflection of Inner Landscape | Fine Art Prints
The Namib Desert, the world's oldest, holds an eternal allure for me. With each visit, its colours and vistas continue to captivate me, leaving me in awe. As the sun rises, casting its golden rays over the landscape, the dead trees of Deadvlei stand like silent sentinels, their stark silhouettes contrasting against the fiery red sands. It's a fleeting moment of breathtaking beauty amidst the harsh desert sun.
On the other hand, my black-and-white prints of these same landscapes aim to capture a different, more timeless perspective. By removing the color, the focus shifts to the texture and form of the landscape. The sweeping curves of the dunes become more pronounced, their ridges and lines etched into the sand. The stark black silhouettes of the trees take on an almost sculptural quality, their twisted forms standing in silent testimony to the passage of time. The absence of color allows the viewer to focus entirely on the texture, light, and shadow, creating an emotional connection to the scene that feels both raw and eternal.
Deadvlei Landscape Wall Art | "Whispers of the Ancients"
"Let the whispers of the past fill your space with 'Whispers of the Ancients.' This print captures the echoes of a world that once thrived and now stands frozen in time. Own this timeless masterpiece today."
Both the color and black-and-white versions of these prints make stunning large wall art, perfect for creating a focal point in modern spaces. Whether you prefer the vibrant energy of the desert in color or the timeless elegance of black-and-white photography, these landscapes have the power to transform any room. The dramatic contrasts and sweeping lines of Deadvlei and Sossusvlei command attention, making them ideal pieces for those looking to add a sense of scale and grandeur to their walls. They bring the raw, untamed beauty of Namibia’s desert right into your home, creating a unique atmosphere of both serenity and awe.
Quiver Tree Forest and Giants Playground: The Sculptural Beauty of Namibia’s Desert
Quiver Tree | Giants Playground | Guardians Of Wisdom | Fine Art Prints
Guardians of Wisdom**: According to San folklore, the quiver tree is inhabited by ancestral spirits or guardians who impart wisdom and guidance to those who seek it. Sitting beneath the shade of a quiver tree is believed to bring clarity of mind and insight into life's mysteries.
The Quiver Tree Forest and Giants Playground are two of the most unique and awe-inspiring locations in Namibia, known for their surreal and almost otherworldly landscapes. The quiver tree, which is not actually a tree but a species of aloe, grows in these arid regions, where the harsh desert conditions and dramatic landscapes combine to create scenes that seem as though they’ve been plucked from a dream.
Quiver Tree | Guardians Of The Desert | Canvas Prints
Guardians of the Desert**: In San mythology, the quiver tree is regarded as a guardian of the desert, watching over the land and its inhabitants with benevolent eyes. Its towering presence serves as a beacon of hope and guidance in the vast expanse of the arid wilderness.
The Quiver Tree Forest is a place where hundreds of these striking trees stand tall, their spindly branches reaching for the sky like living sculptures. Their name comes from the tradition of using their hollow branches to make quivers for carrying arrows, but their appearance is far from ordinary. With their jagged trunks and bright yellow flowers in the spring, the quiver trees seem to have a quiet, almost mystical energy. They dominate the landscape, their twisted forms cutting through the wide expanse of the desert.
Nearby, Giants Playground presents a different yet equally fascinating landscape. Massive boulders are scattered across the terrain, some stacked precariously atop one another in strange formations that appear to have been placed by giant hands. The contrast between the jagged rocks and the gracefully contorted quiver trees creates a striking and otherworldly scene.
Quiver Tree | Echoes Of The Past
Legend has it that the quiver tree carries echoes of the past within its gnarled branches, preserving the memories and stories of generations. Each twist and turn in its bark tells a tale of survival, resilience, and the enduring legacy of the San people.
Through my black-and-white prints, the intricate beauty of these landscapes is captured in a way that brings out their timeless, ancient qualities. The absence of color allows the viewer to focus entirely on the textures and forms of the quiver trees and rock formations. The trees’ spindly branches stand in sharp contrast to the solid, textured rocks, each element telling its own story of survival in the harsh desert environment. The play of light and shadow, particularly during the early morning or late afternoon, highlights the dramatic contours and details of the scene. In these prints, the quiver trees take on an almost sculptural appearance, their gnarled forms enhanced by the strong contrasts that black-and-white photography offers.
Silent Sentinel of the Northern Cape"Fine Art Prints
A Giant Quiver Tree stands atop the Black Hills in the Northern Cape, South Africa, with its unique, sculptural form silhouetted against the rugged desert landscape.
The timeless beauty of these locations is preserved in every print. By emphasizing the raw textures and unique shapes, my black-and-white prints evoke a sense of the ancient, of a landscape that has been untouched and enduring for millennia. These fine art pieces are perfect for minimalist or contemporary interiors, where their stark beauty can serve as a bold statement piece. The dramatic contrast and intricate details work well in spaces that value simplicity and the power of nature, allowing the art to become a focal point without overwhelming the surroundings.
Whether displayed in a home, office, or gallery space, these prints infuse any room with a sense of quiet majesty and wonder. Their understated yet powerful presence makes them ideal for modern and minimalist designs, where they complement the surrounding elements while standing out as works of art that evoke reflection, conversation, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.
Spitzkoppe and Black Hills: Masterpieces of Solitude and Grandeur
Spitzkop | Namibian Landscape | Fine Art Prints
"Introducing a captivating landscape capturing the essence of Namibia's breathtaking beauty: my stunning black and white fine art print featuring the majestic Spitzkoppe Mountains and a magnificent Camel Thorn tree as the focal point.
Spitzkoppe, with its dramatic granite peaks, is one of Namibia's most iconic landscapes. Captured in black-and-white, the stark contrasts of light and shadow highlight the rugged textures of the rocks. The interplay of sunlight and deep shadows brings out the form and scale of the peaks, evoking a sense of grandeur and timelessness. The print emphasizes the strength and solitude of this majestic desert landscape, making it perfect for creating a focal point in modern spaces or offices.
Black Hills | Namibia | Fine Art Prints | Canvas Prints
Immerse Yourself In The Breathtaking Vastness Of The Namibian Landscape, Where The Rugged Silhouette Of The 'Black Hills' Stands As A Testament To The Raw And Untamed Nature Of This Captivating Land. As Far As The Eye Can See, The Earth Stretches Out In A Desolate Panorama, Inviting You To Explore Its Mysterious Depths.
The Black Hills print offers a different perspective, focusing on the rolling hills away from Spitzkoppe. This piece, with its serene, ink-wash-like qualities, evokes a peaceful and meditative feel, where light and dark shapes define the landscape. The monochromatic tones add sophistication and depth, making it ideal for minimalist or contemporary interiors.
Both prints, with their dramatic textures and tranquil beauty, create a sense of solitude and grandeur. They work beautifully as large wall art, transforming any room with their timeless appeal.
Landscapes Of South Africa: Drama and Serenity
Storm Over the Karoo | Magnificent Landscape Wall Art
Witnessing a "Storm over the Karoo" is an awe-inspiring sight. The Karoo holds a special place in my heart, with its vast open skies evoking a profound sense of joy and tranquillity.
Captured in Mountain Zebra National Park, this powerful moment showcases the raw beauty of the Karoo. The parched earth, stark and dry, contrasts with the ominous dark storm clouds gathering overhead. In the distance, waves of rain begin to fall, adding to the intensity of the scene. This black-and-white print emphasises the dramatic contrast between the elements, showcasing the immense power of nature. It’s a striking statement piece that commands attention and works beautifully as large wall art, making it ideal for creating impact in both modern homes and offices.
Vanishing Point | Impressive White Dunes Of Witsands
In this piece, the serene yet dramatic landscape is brought to life through the contrast of light and shadow, capturing the raw, untamed beauty of nature. Watch the process behind the print, from capturing the scene to the final artwork. I hope you enjoy this glimpse into the moment as much as I loved creating it.
The unexpected storm that swept across the white dunes created a dramatic scene, transforming the landscape into a high-contrast masterpiece. The low-angle perspective enhances the sweeping patterns of the dune, leading the viewer’s eye up to the vanishing point where the stormy sky merges with the dune's peak. The deep blacks and bright whites in this B&W print add depth and intensity, creating a sense of drama and movement. It’s a perfect piece for modern interiors, where its striking composition and visual depth can transform any wall into a focal point of artistic expression.

The impact of large-scale photography is undeniable. A striking piece on your wall can instantly set the tone for a room, whether it’s creating a sense of serenity with a peaceful landscape or energizing the space with the dynamic power of a storm. It brings the outside in, offering an emotional connection to nature, making your living or working environment feel expansive and alive.
Tree Of Life | Quiver Tree | Canvas Prints
160 x 120 cm (62.99 x 47.24 inches) Matte Canvas On Stretcher Frame | Solid Wood Floating Frame
When choosing the right print for your space, consider the room’s style and mood. For minimalist interiors, a black-and-white print like the Quiver Tree Forest or Vanishing Point can add elegance and drama without overwhelming the simplicity of the design. In a contemporary setting, vibrant color prints of the Sossusvlei dunes or Storm Over the Karoo can bring warmth and vibrancy, serving as the focal point of the room. For traditional spaces, prints featuring softer textures and tones, such as the Spitzkoppe landscape, can complement the earthy tones and classic style of the room.

The Essence of Black and White Photography
Black and white photography has a timeless quality that transcends trends and technological advancements. In the world of wildlife photography, removing color strips an image down to its essence, revealing the raw beauty, emotion, and power of nature in its purest form. From the intricate wrinkles of an elephant’s skin to the piercing gaze of a lion, monochrome photography allows us to focus on what truly matters—the subject, its emotion, and its story.
Take, for example, my black-and-white fine art print "Heart of Darkness"—a chilling portrait of a Kalahari black-maned lion on the hunt. His predatory gaze captures the raw intensity of nature, evoking the primal fear our ancestors once felt in the presence of these majestic creatures. Or consider "Big Foot," an award-winning close-up of an elephant’s foot that celebrates the overlooked details of the wild. These images, and others like them, are more than photographs; they are windows into the soul of the natural world.
"Heart of Darkness" – A chilling portrait of a Kalahari black-maned lion on the hunt.
"Heart of Darkness,"
My black-and-white fine-art print captures a moment with a Kalahari black-maned lion that will leave you feeling both exhilarated and unnerved. This lion has murder on his mind as he hunts a female and cubs from another pride. Just a few minutes before, I watched an anxious mother and cubs run towards me and pass me, not realizing the danger they were in. It wasn't until the male lion came into view that I understood why they were in such a hurry. I followed as far as I could, photographing him as he walked after the lioness and cubs.
As you gaze upon the lion's intense eyes in this print, you'll feel the fear that our forefathers once experienced in the presence of these majestic creatures. The lion's predatory gaze is a chilling reminder of the danger that once threatened their families and livestock. Hang "Heart of Darkness" on your wall and feel the connection between man and beast, a reminder of the fragility and strength of our world.
"Big Foot" – An award-winning close-up of an elephant’s foot, celebrating the overlooked details of the wild.
Let me introduce you to "Big Foot", one of my most cherished black-and-white fine art prints. This close-up of an elephant’s foot captured at Mapungubwe Game Reserve earned the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2011 award in the Nature in Black and White category.
The story behind this image is one of serendipity and creativity. 🐘 It was a cold morning in the hide—no coffee, no short lens, just a 600mm telephoto in hand. When a herd of elephants came within 20 meters, I embraced the challenge. Instead of wide shots, I zoomed in on the details: the tusks, the eyes, the tail... and then, this striking foot. Sometimes, limitations inspire the most remarkable creations.
This print has become a symbol of patience, adaptability, and the beauty of focusing on the overlooked. It’s available as a fine art black-and-white print, perfect for collectors and nature enthusiasts.
A Personal Journey:
From the Trading Floor to the Darkroom
My journey into black and white photography began in an unexpected place—the heart of London’s financial district. As a money broker for 14 years, I lived in a fast-paced world of numbers, deals, and high-pressure decisions. But amidst the chaos, I found solace in the quiet moments spent in bookshops, poring over the works of legendary photographers. One image in particular—a haunting black-and-white portrait by Don McCullin—stirred something deep within me. As an Irish immigrant, I saw reflections of my own journey in that photograph, sparking an unshakable curiosity for the art of storytelling through imagery.
Determined to explore this passion, I enrolled in night classes and immersed myself in the world of film photography. I spent countless hours in the darkroom, learning the nuances of light, shadow, and composition. Even as digital technology revolutionized the field, my foundation in traditional black and white printing remained the backbone of my artistic vision. Today, this journey has come full circle, as I dedicate my life to capturing Africa’s wildlife through the lens of monochrome photography.

The Emotional Impact of Black and White Photography
One of the most compelling aspects of black and white wildlife photography is its ability to evoke emotion. Without the distraction of color, viewers are drawn into the composition, focusing on texture, contrast, and form. The interplay between light and shadow creates drama and depth, enhancing the emotional weight of the image.
For me, monochrome is more than just a stylistic choice—it’s a way of seeing. It allows me to strip away distractions and create imagery that speaks to the heart of my audience.
“Weathering the Tempest,” this black-and-white portrait of a lion and lioness
in the Masai Mara reveals a quiet power, capturing a fleeting moment against a dramatic African sky. Framed by brooding storm clouds and a lone tree in the vast savannah, this image conveys not just a scene but a story of resilience and connection.
The lion, poised and looking beyond the frame, suggests an unseen tension, while the lioness, lying down after a brief moment of intimacy, meets the viewer’s gaze directly. Together, they hold an intensity that speaks to their shared strength in the face of nature’s looming tempest.
“By using a wide lens, I included the vastness of the Mara and the dramatic sky, giving the image a sense of place and scale. In the digital darkroom, I translated the scene into monochrome, using light and shadow to guide the viewer’s eye through the image. The result was a black-and-white print that not only documented the moment but also told a story of strength, connection, and the raw beauty of the wild”
A Moment of Contemplation:
The Story Behind My Award-Winning Chimpanzee Portrait
Some of my most memorable experiences in the wild have been through my camera lens—watching elephants interact in a way that mirrors human relationships or witnessing a predator in deep contemplation before the hunt. But one encounter stands out above the rest: my time with the chimpanzees of Kibale National Park in Uganda.
Trekking through the ancient rainforests of Kibale was no simple task. Hours of slow-paced trekking yielded only brief, elusive glimpses of great apes high in the canopy. Time was running out, and I was anxious about the lack of sightings.
Then, it happened. A chimpanzee descended from the trees, followed by a flurry of them, like paratroopers. Watching them engage in what seemed like a hunt was heart-pounding. It ended as swiftly as it began, leaving behind an eerie silence. Taking a chance, I sought permission to venture off on my own. Resting on a fallen log, I sensed a presence. There he was—Totti, an alpha male chimpanzee, with penetrating hazel eyes, fixated on a female high above. His desire and dejection were palpable.
Unexpectedly, Totti lay on his back, a posture of resignation and longing. My instincts as a photographer kicked in, and I captured a moment of profound contemplation. This image, Contemplation, became a black-and-white fine art print and later won the Animal Portraits category at Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2017.
Dreaming in the Forest | Contemplative Chimpanzee Art
“a chimpanzee contemplates the world around him with deep thought and introspection. This intimate portrait captures the thoughtful gaze of one of Africa’s most intelligent creatures. If you're looking for wild animal art that adds a sense of wonder to your home, this chimpanzee fine art print invites you to pause, reflect, and admire the contemplative nature of the wild. The black and white photography creates a striking contrast that enhances the soulful gaze of the chimpanzee”
Crafting a Black and White Masterpiece
Achieving a striking black and white wildlife photograph requires a thoughtful approach to lighting, composition, and post-processing. Here are some key techniques I use in my work:
Lighting: Strong directional light enhances contrast and texture, making black and white images more dynamic. Early morning or late afternoon light creates beautiful shadows and highlights.
Composition: Framing and perspective are crucial. Leading lines, negative space, texture, shape and form all help create balanced and impactful compositions.
Post-Processing: Converting an image to black and white is more than desaturating colors. Adjusting tonal contrast, deepening shadows, and enhancing highlights in the digital darkroom helps bring out the drama and mood of the image.
Each of my black and white images undergoes a meticulous editing process. While technical precision is essential, I place equal emphasis on the emotional connection between the viewer and the subject. This connection is what elevates a good photograph to a great one.
My goal is to ensure that every print conveys the emotion I felt in the moment of capture—transforming it from a mere image into an experience frozen in time.
