Najin | The Quiet Earth
— Into the Wild | The Story
Some photographs carry the weight of something much larger than the moment in which they were made.
Najin is one of the last two northern white rhinos remaining on Earth.
I photographed her at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, where she lives under protection in a world that is very different from the one her species once knew.
There was something deeply moving about seeing her there.
She is enormous, powerful and unmistakably wild in her presence, yet the boundaries around her are a reminder of why she must be protected.
Then I noticed the bird perched quietly on the fence post.
Just beyond Najin was the suggestion of another world, a world of freedom that she can no longer fully inhabit.
That small detail stayed with me.
The photograph suddenly became about more than a rhino. It became about what has been lost, what remains, and how fragile the line between survival and extinction can be.
Najin carries the memory of an entire species.
She is a living connection to a world that is disappearing, and a reminder of the responsibility we carry to protect what remains.
She is not simply one of the last northern white rhinos. She is a sanctuary of a vanishing world.
