Into the Wild — The Godfather | The Story

Some places stay with you long after you've left. Etosha is one of them.

This is what I call him, a towering bull elephant who rules a waterhole deep inside Etosha National Park, Namibia. At around four metres tall and over four tons, his presence is not just seen, it's felt.

Day after day, the same ritual unfolds. He arrives in the heat of the afternoon with two shadow bulls, claiming the only water source for kilometres around. In this harsh landscape, everything waits on him — springbok, zebra, giraffe, even lion, all held at a distance until the giants decide to move on.

For weeks, I watched this pattern repeat itself, always hoping for a different outcome, always just missing the moment I had imagined.

Until one day, everything aligned. I had already left the waterhole that afternoon, anticipating their route, trusting instinct more than routine. I waited in silence, breath steady. And then he appeared.

He stopped in front of me in complete stillness, filling the frame with an overwhelming sense of presence. Slowly, he raised his trunk, drawing in a load of red Kalahari dust, and in one fluid motion, sprayed his massive form.

For a brief moment, he stood there wrapped in dust and light, ancient and unmovable, as if the landscape itself had taken shape.

A reminder that patience in the wild is never wasted.

Collector Stories

Reflections from collectors who have welcomed Peter Delaney's artwork into their homes around the world.

"

After some delay, I finally had 'Bonds of Love' framed and placed on my bedroom wall, a gift from my husband for our 50th wedding anniversary. He passed away not long after, and two years on, this photograph continues to comfort me. It is the first thing I see every morning, and it gladdens my heart.

This is not a photograph hanging on a wall. It is a window into something vast and unhurried.
