Into the Wild — Contemplation | The Story
Some moments in the wild stay with you forever.
This photograph, Contemplation (also known as Chimpanzee Dreaming), was created deep in Uganda's Kibale Forest after days of trekking through dense rainforest in search of wild chimpanzees.
Then, in complete silence, this moment unfolded.
An alpha male named Totti lay back on the forest floor, hands gently clasped, gazing up into the canopy after being rejected by a female. For a fleeting moment, the boundary between human and animal emotion seemed to disappear.
This image went on to win the Animal Portrait category at Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2017, but to me it has always been about something far quieter: vulnerability, longing, and the quiet dignity of the wild.
On World Chimpanzee Day, it's also a reminder that these remarkable animals continue to face threats from habitat loss, disease, and the illegal wildlife trade. Protecting them means protecting the forests they call home.
What emotion do you see in his expression?
