“The San and the Tree of Life – Quiver Tree Portraits”

Portraits of the sacred quiver tree, captured in the lunar landscapes of Namibia and the Northern Cape.

A giver of shade, of arrows, of spirit."

Long before the roads and maps, before the fences and farms, there were the San people and the quiver tree, known to them as choje.

In the scorched landscapes of the Northern Cape and the lunar geology of Namibia’s Giant’s Playground, this otherworldly tree stood not just as a botanical anomaly but as a companion in survival.

To the San, the quiver tree was sacred. Its hollow branches held arrows carved for the hunt. Its bark, thick with moisture, offered relief from heat and thirst. Its roots anchored not only the desert soil, but also a connection to the spirit world.

Beneath its shade, ceremonies were held.

Prayers rose with the heat.

Stories were whispered into bark and stone.
