Into the Wild — Dawn of Man | The Story

Some landscapes seem to belong to another time.

I had come to Spitzkoppe expecting to photograph the mountain, but the obvious view didn't interest me. I wanted to step away from the granite and find something small enough to give the vastness of the landscape a quiet centre.

I walked across the dry, stony plains, searching for a solitary camel thorn. The landscape was harsh and almost completely stripped back, scattered stones and sparse vegetation stretching towards the ancient granite peaks.

Then I found it.

The tree stood within the broad natural curve of Spitzkoppe, small against the immense mountain yet somehow perfectly placed. For a moment, everything aligned. The tree, the mountain, the empty space between them.

Standing there, I couldn't help but think about how much this landscape has witnessed. The San who moved through these mountains thousands of years ago. The ancient paintings left upon the rock. And later, the same extraordinary landscape imagined by Stanley Kubrick as the setting for the Dawn of Man in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Different stories. Different centuries. One ancient landscape.

Sometimes, a photograph is not about capturing a place. It is about finding your way into it.

Collector Stories

Reflections from collectors who have welcomed Peter Delaney's artwork into their homes around the world.

"

After some delay, I finally had 'Bonds of Love' framed and placed on my bedroom wall, a gift from my husband for our 50th wedding anniversary. He passed away not long after, and two years on, this photograph continues to comfort me. It is the first thing I see every morning, and it gladdens my heart.

This is not a photograph hanging on a wall. It is a window into something vast and unhurried.

Queen of the Mara has occupied a central place in our living room since 2020. It helped us feel connected to the world at a time when we... weren't.
