Kicked out of the tribe, he lay in the Kibale forest — not defeated, but watching. Listening. Above him, a female called from the canopy. Behind him, a civil war was brewing.
Researchers say the group is splintering. It happens once every 500 years in chimpanzee society—Brother against brother.
I captured him in a moment of quiet calculation. Resting pose. Open eyes. A fallen king waiting for his moment.

Two brothers. One termite mound. A pact forged in kinship.
Cheetah – Speed and Brotherhood
In Mara North Conservancy, Kenya, two cheetah brothers — Ruka and Rafiki — rest atop a dark termite mound amid a flowing carpet of pale grass.
Rafiki stands alert, scanning the plains ahead. Ruka lies beneath him, glancing to the side. One watches forward. The other guards the rear. Constant vigilance. Shared survival.
I waited. Eventually, one brother stood. I positioned myself low, letting the dramatic empty sky dominate the frame. The long grasses flowed around the mound like a sea. Nothing to distract the viewer.
Only black and white could tell this story.
At the time, only around sixty cheetah remained in this area. Months later, both brothers crossed into Tanzania. Only Ruka returned.
To photograph them is to immortalise not just hunters, but heirs to a fragile legacy.
