Deadvlei — Into the Wild | The Story
Thirteen years ago, on my first visit to Deadvlei, I walked among the ancient camelthorn trees before sunrise.
There was something about the landscape that stayed with me. The blackened trees stood against the white clay pan and towering dunes, their forms seemingly suspended outside of time.
One particular tree caught my attention.
I could see the photograph I wanted to make, but the moment never came.
I carried that image in my mind for years.
When I finally returned to Deadvlei, the landscape was familiar, but the conditions were completely different.
A storm had moved across the desert, and a strong wind swept fine dust across the white pan. For a few brief moments, the landscape disappeared into a veil of haze.
And then the tree appeared.
The same tree I had remembered all those years before, now standing against the dune through the drifting dust.
The storm had created the atmosphere I had imagined thirteen years earlier, but could never have forced into existence.
For me, Deadvlei is about more than a remarkable tree in one of Namibia's most extraordinary landscapes. It is about returning to a place, carrying an image with you for years, and finally being given the moment you had been waiting for.
Sometimes the photograph is there long before you are ready to make it.
