Deadvlei — Into the Wild | The Story
Thirteen years ago, on my first visit to Deadvlei with Nicolinah, who would later become my wife, I walked among the ancient camel thorn trees before sunrise.
There was something hauntingly beautiful about them. Their blackened forms stood against the white clay pan and towering dunes, each tree seemingly frozen in time.
One particular tree caught my attention.
I could see the photograph I wanted to make, but the moment never came.
Years passed before I returned to Deadvlei, this time while guiding a client and teaching the art of photography.
We were standing some distance from the trees when the landscape suddenly changed.
A strong gust of wind swept across the pan, lifting fine dust and sand into the air. For just a few seconds, the familiar landscape disappeared into a veil of haze.
And there it was.
The tree I had remembered all those years before.
I was handholding a 200mm lens, and I had only moments to react. Through the drifting dust, the tree emerged against the dune, its skeletal branches reaching into the silvery light.
The storm had created exactly the atmosphere I had imagined thirteen years earlier.
For me, Deadvlei is about more than the tree itself. It is about returning to a place, carrying an image in your mind for years, and finally being given the moment you had been waiting for.
Sometimes the photograph is there long before you are ready to make it.
