Into the Wild β€” The Gladiator | The Story

Out here, the desert never stays still for long.

This was captured deep in the Kalahari, where survival is never gentle and every moment carries weight. At the height of the dry season, life gathers at the last remaining waterholes. Around them, the remnants of a fallen eland become the centre of an ancient, unrelenting ritual.

Then they arrive. White-backed vultures descend in waves, cutting through heat and dust, their movements sharp, chaotic, and instinct-driven. What follows is not silence, but noise: wings, calls, confrontation, urgency. A constant negotiation for survival.

I watched from a distance as the scene unfolded, waiting for the right alignment of light, tension, and motion. In moments like these, everything changes in seconds, and there is no second chance.

Among the chaos, one figure held my attention: a vulture caught in a posture that felt almost gladiatorial, poised between violence and control, instinct and precision.

It was not just a feeding event. It was a battle of presence, endurance, and dominance in one of Africa's harshest environments.

In that instant, the Kalahari revealed itself for what it truly is: unforgiving, beautiful, and utterly alive.

Collector Stories

Reflections from collectors who have welcomed Peter Delaney's artwork into their homes around the world.

"

After some delay, I finally had 'Bonds of Love' framed and placed on my bedroom wall, a gift from my husband for our 50th wedding anniversary. He passed away not long after, and two years on, this photograph continues to comfort me. It is the first thing I see every morning, and it gladdens my heart.

This is not a photograph hanging on a wall. It is a window into something vast and unhurried.

Queen of the Mara has occupied a central place in our living room since 2020. It helped us feel connected to the world at a time when we... weren't.
