Into the Wild — Craig | The Story
A giant has left the earth, but his legacy endures.
Craig, one of Africa's last great Super Tuskers, passed away on 3 January 2026. For decades, he walked the plains of Amboseli with quiet authority, his immense, ground-sweeping tusks making him one of the most recognisable and celebrated elephants in Africa.
Born in 1972, Craig became a symbol of hope, a living reminder that conservation can succeed. At a time when elephants with tusks weighing over 50 kg each have become extraordinarily rare, he stood apart: powerful, gentle, and unforgettable.
I had the privilege of photographing Craig during his lifetime in Amboseli beneath the watchful presence of Kilimanjaro. Accompanied by two other bulls, he moved through the landscape with the calm confidence of an old king, carrying decades of stories in every step.
In black and white, this image feels even more timeless, less a photograph, more a tribute. A tribute to a rare life. A tribute to resilience. A tribute to one of the last great giants of Africa.
