Into the Wild — Vernayi | Etosha, Namibia

Close your eyes. Now open them. You are here.

There are lions you photograph, and there are lions you remember.

Vernayi was one of those encounters.

Moving through the golden winter grass of the Kalahari, this magnificent black-maned lion appeared like a force of nature. Tall, powerful, and completely in his prime, he moved with quiet purpose across the landscape, his attention fixed somewhere beyond my lens.

Unlike my black-and-white portrait "Heart of Darkness", where his gaze becomes an intimate study of intensity and presence, "Vernayi" tells a wider story. It places the lion back into his world, surrounded by the vastness of the Kalahari and the atmosphere of a fleeting wilderness moment.

The winter grass reached around his legs as he walked through the dust-filled air. Behind him, a narrow glimpse of Etosha's grey-blue sky appeared through the haze, while the soft-focus vegetation disappeared into the distance. Every element of the scene spoke of Africa's raw beauty.

His mane carried the colours of the Kalahari itself, deep charcoal shadows blending into rich ochre, burnt orange, and warm golden tones. The light caught the movement of his flowing mane, the curl of his tail, and the unmistakable strength of a mature male lion.

His amber eyes looked beyond me, focused on the landscape ahead. In that moment, I was not photographing a portrait. I was witnessing a lion moving through his kingdom.

"Vernayi" is a celebration of the African lion in its natural environment, a rare colour fine art print from a photographer best known for his black-and-white wildlife photography.

For collectors, this image represents a different side of Africa — not the silence of a monochrome portrait, but the warmth, dust, colour, and untamed energy of the wild.

Collector Stories

Reflections from collectors who have welcomed Peter Delaney's artwork into their homes around the world.

"

After some delay, I finally had 'Bonds of Love' framed and placed on my bedroom wall, a gift from my husband for our 50th wedding anniversary. He passed away not long after, and two years on, this photograph continues to comfort me. It is the first thing I see every morning, and it gladdens my heart.

This is not a photograph hanging on a wall. It is a window into something vast and unhurried.

Queen of the Mara has occupied a central place in our living room since 2020. It helped us feel connected to the world at a time when we... weren't.
