The Ancient Ghost of Etosha — An Ode to Time
There are moments in the wild when you are no longer photographing an animal.
You are standing before a lifetime.
Deep in Etosha National Park, Namibia, I encountered one of the park's legendary elephant bulls, one of the "Grey Ghosts of Etosha".
He stood quietly at the waterhole, a giant figure shaped by decades beneath the African sun. His body carried the colour of the landscape itself, marked by the pale calcite patina left behind by Etosha's mineral-rich waters.
He looked less like a living creature and more like a monument carved from granite.
Every line told a story.
The deep wrinkles across his face. The torn edge of his ear. The worn tusk that spoke of decades of use. The eyelashes coated in calcite, giving him the appearance of a sculpture weathered by time.
Looking at him, I felt I was not simply witnessing an elephant.
I was witnessing time itself.
A life measured not in years, but in seasons. In droughts survived. In journeys taken. In landscapes crossed. In memories carried.
Perhaps that is why this encounter stayed with me.
Because, in his weathered face, I recognised something familiar. The marks left by time. The memories of seasons gone by. The quiet understanding that every journey leaves its own imprint.
Time leaves its mark on everything.
The land. The animals. And ourselves.
This bull became more than a subject for a photograph.
He became a witness to the passing of seasons, a living monument to everything time shapes and preserves.
A Personal Note
This print holds a deeper meaning for me.
Today, as I share the story of this ancient elephant bull, my youngest son Shay celebrates his fourth birthday.
The timing feels strangely fitting.
This print is a reflection on time, on the seasons we pass through, and on the stories we leave behind. As a father, I hope that one day this artwork will serve as a reminder of the journey we shared, the places I explored, and the passion that shaped my life.
The Ancient Ghost of Etosha will be released as a limited edition in honour of Shay, a small piece of my journey that I hope he will one day carry with him.
