Into the Wild — The Tuskless Matriarchs | The Story

Close your eyes. Now open them. You are here.

Three females walked together across the fynbos, their pace unhurried, their bond unmistakable.

Behind them followed a great bull, his long ivory tusks catching the light as he moved in quiet silence. For a moment, the contrast was striking. Power behind them. Purpose before them.

Yet it was the females who led.

This photograph was made in Addo Elephant National Park, home to one of Africa's most extraordinary elephant populations. Around ninety percent of the females here are born without tusks, the legacy of relentless ivory hunting more than a century ago. Those without tusks survived, raised calves, and slowly reshaped the future of the herd.

Watching them, it was impossible not to admire their resilience.

They have adapted, endured, and continued, proving that survival is not always about strength, but the quiet ability to change.

I called this photograph The Tuskless Matriarchs.

It is a reminder that nature has an extraordinary capacity to heal, and that even after great loss, life finds a way forward.

Collector Stories

Reflections from collectors who have welcomed Peter Delaney's artwork into their homes around the world.

"

After some delay, I finally had 'Bonds of Love' framed and placed on my bedroom wall, a gift from my husband for our 50th wedding anniversary. He passed away not long after, and two years on, this photograph continues to comfort me. It is the first thing I see every morning, and it gladdens my heart.

This is not a photograph hanging on a wall. It is a window into something vast and unhurried.

Queen of the Mara has occupied a central place in our living room since 2020. It helped us feel connected to the world at a time when we... weren't.
