It was one of those African afternoons where the air feels thick, heavy with heat and anticipation. We bumped slowly along a scarred dirt road, the kind that gently shakes the last remnants of everyday life from your body. By our third day on safari, the rhythm of the wild had already taken hold. Time softened. Stress dissolved. We were present.
Towering cumulonimbus clouds loomed on the horizon, their dark bellies promising rain. The scent of moisture hung in the air, carried by a sudden cool breeze that swept through the vehicle. Distant rumbles of thunder echoed across the plains, charging the atmosphere with quiet excitement.
As always, my mind was composing photographs before my camera ever moved. Light, texture, form, emotion. Then I saw them.
Elephant matriarchs are the cornerstone of their families.
Their knowledge of migration routes, water sources, and survival strategies is passed down through generations, ensuring the continuity of their herds.

A Herd Approaches
In the distance, a line of dark, earthen shapes moved with unmistakable purpose. Elephants. A small herd, walking slowly, grazing as they went. As we closed the distance, it became clear they had discovered a rich strip of sweet, green grass along the roadside. They stopped, unhurried, completely at ease.
At the heart of every elephant family stands the matriarch. She is the memory keeper, the decision maker, the quiet force guiding generations. Migration routes, water sources, survival knowledge—all carried in her presence and passed down through time. Without her, the family unravels.
I reached out and gently touched Benson's arm.
"Slow down. Stop here."
He looked at me, confused. We were still some distance away.

Wild animals, like people, have an invisible comfort zone. Step into it uninvited and the result is fear, tension, or flight. Stay outside it, remain calm and respectful, and something extraordinary can happen. Instead of us entering their space, I wanted the elephants to enter ours.

The herd continued forward, their movement almost silent on their great cushioned feet. I had stopped in a shallow depression in the road, knowing that if they stayed their course, we would meet eye to eye. Eye to Eye
And then I felt it.
I had not seen her at first. She had been turned away, partially obscured by the others. My heart rate lifted. My senses sharpened. I had always dreamed of photographing an elephant with long, sweeping tusks, and I had assumed that moment would come with a bull.
But this was her.
The matriarch.
Her tusks were the longest I had ever seen on a female elephant, elegant and impossibly heavy, curving with age and authority. The herd surrounded us now, calm, unconcerned, moving like a living wall of grey. We were completely still. Completely accepted.
I worried briefly about focal length and rotated the camera to portrait orientation. Just enough space in the frame.

She turned toward me as she reached for another mouthful of grass. Eye to eye. One of my guests let out a soft gasp as a baby elephant stretched its trunk toward her. In an instant, the matriarch reacted, ears extending outward, alert but composed. Marataba, a beautiful game reserve in the North West of South Africa, is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike. During a recent photographic safari with clients, I had the privilege of spending time with a coalition of pride males, Caesar and Cassius, Kalahari black-maned lions.

One of the highlights of the safari was the time spent with Caesar and Cassius. These Kalahari black-maned lions are a subspecies known for their power and impressive black manes, giving them an intimidating appearance. They can grow to a height of 1.46 meters and weigh up to 263 kilograms, perfectly adapted to the extreme climate and conditions of the Kalahari.

Caesar and Cassius were born at Marataba and had ruled the pride for many years, siring many young. When we found them, they had just finished eating a large zebra they had killed themselves. Soon after, their pride arrived to feed on the remains.

We followed Caesar and Cassius to a nearby waterhole, where they went to drink. It was there that I captured wonderful intimate moments between the two big males and one of their cubs. Moments like these, where Cassius sat in a regal pose with a cub posing in front, are rare and precious.

that showcases the majestic beauty of a herd of elephants in Etosha, Namibia. This stunning image, one of my favourites, resulted from a week-long quest in one of my most cherished photographic destinations.
The journey to capture this image was filled with anticipation and moments of despair. For days, I scoured the vast landscape in search of this particular herd of over thirty elephants. Just as hope was waning, fortune smiled upon me on the final day of my self-drive photographic safari. I spotted the herd from a distance and quickly made my way to a nearby waterhole on a small plateau. Although I missed them drinking, my spirits lifted as I watched the elephants begin to move in my direction.
Seizing the moment, I positioned my vehicle parallel to the ridge and set up my camera, ensuring every detail was perfect. With the dust and sand creating an ethereal atmosphere, the elephants aligned perfectly along the ridge's spine. I pressed the shutter, immortalizing this fleeting moment in "Elephant Ridge." In an instant, the alignment was gone, but the image captured a timeless scene that will forever resonate with me.
