Into the Wild — Elephant Velvia Sunset | The Story

I was driving back to camp. The day was over. The camera was packed away.
For the past hour, the sky above the Etosha Pan had been changing, purple giving way to pink, then burning into a red so intense it hardly seemed real.
Then, as if on cue, a lone bull elephant wandered to the water's edge.
He wasn't posing. He wasn't aware of me. He simply stood there, grazing beneath a sky that felt too extraordinary to exist.
I pulled over, unpacked my camera, and made the photograph before the light disappeared.
I called it Elephant Velvia Sunset, a tribute to the legendary Fujifilm Velvia film, famous for its rich, saturated colours. It reminded me of the film I once loaded into my camera hoping for evenings exactly like this.
I have spent most of my career seeing Africa in black and white.
But every so often, nature creates a moment that asks to be remembered exactly as it was.
This is one of only two colour elephant photographs in my collection.
Because sometimes colour isn't a choice.
It's the truth.
