Into the Wild — March of the Grey Ghosts | The Story

Etosha had been strangely empty that day.

After almost five hours of driving through the heat and dust, I had seen very little wildlife. The rains had failed, the waterholes were quiet, and the great white expanse of Etosha Pan seemed almost completely deserted.

I stopped beneath a camel thorn and waited beside one of the natural springs where elephants and rhinos sometimes come to drink.

For hours, nothing came.

Then, far out across the pan, something appeared through the heat haze.

At first they looked like ghosts.

Seven grey shapes, moving slowly towards me.

Bull elephants.

I watched through my binoculars as they approached, walking in a line towards the spring. I drove ahead and positioned the vehicle beside the track, leaving their path completely clear.

Then I waited.

The elephants came closer.

And closer.

Their footsteps were almost silent, but my heart was pounding.

They passed within metres of the vehicle, enormous against the empty landscape. The lead bull came into view, lifted his head and suddenly spread his ears wide.

For a brief moment, the seven bulls formed a single line behind him, disappearing into the heat and dust.

I pressed the shutter.

The moment lasted only seconds.

But some encounters stay with you long after the photograph has been made.

There was something ancient about those seven bulls moving through Etosha. No urgency. No fear. Just the quiet certainty of animals that have travelled these landscapes for generations.

And for once, I wasn't searching for Africa.

Africa had come looking for me.
