Dune on Fire β€” Into the Wild | The Story

Sometimes, the photographic gods smile.

Dune 45 is one of the most photographed places in Namibia, and finding something different here is never easy. From sunrise to late afternoon, visitors climb its slopes, footprints crossing the sand in every direction.

But late one afternoon, everything changed. As a sandstorm rolled in, people scattered for cover, leaving the dunes empty. Just Nicolinah and I remained, alone with the wind and silence.

The sand came hard, stinging my face and eyes as I crouched behind the 4x4 for shelter, and waited.

Slowly, the storm transformed the landscape. The wind erased every footprint. The light shifted. The dunes became something else entirely, glowing like fire beneath the moving sand.

For a few fleeting moments, it felt as though the desert belonged only to us.

This image holds the memory of a wild afternoon, a shared moment with my wife, and the reminder that patience sometimes gives you something unforgettable.

Collector Stories

Reflections from collectors who have welcomed Peter Delaney's artwork into their homes around the world.

"

After some delay, I finally had 'Bonds of Love' framed and placed on my bedroom wall, a gift from my husband for our 50th wedding anniversary. He passed away not long after, and two years on, this photograph continues to comfort me. It is the first thing I see every morning, and it gladdens my heart.

This is not a photograph hanging on a wall. It is a window into something vast and unhurried.

To have one of Peter Delaney's images in your home is your connection to a world few of us will ever experience, and a connection to nature and the earth that is truly rare.

Queen of the Mara has occupied a central place in our living room since 2020. It helped us feel connected to the world at a time when we... weren't.
