That dream finally came true during a journey to Mountain Zebra National Park. The Karoo had been dry for months. The earth was cracked and thirsty, the wind still, the air heavy with a tension that only comes before something extraordinary. We had been in the park for a few days, photographing the wildlife and soaking in the quiet. But on our final day, the sky shifted. A low rumble rolled across the plains.

Then it happened.
The heavens opened in a dramatic display. Dark, roiling clouds gathered above us, painting the sky in charcoal and cobalt. The smell of the rain hitting the dust was intoxicating — that rich, earthy scent so uniquely African. Hailstones danced across the ground, and the once-still plains burst into life.
