Quiver Tree Rosette
The Quiver tree's thick succulent leaves grow in a rosette, but up to 6 meters in the air to escape the worst of the devastating heat; each on the end of a stumpy branch. To keep cool, the branches are thickly coated in a fine white powder that reflects the sun's heat rather than absorbing it. The branches and trunk are filled with a soft fibre capable of holding a large amount of water.
The massive quiver tree is listed as critically endangered. It is found in a narrow band, with its southernmost range well above the Tropic of Capricorn. Their numbers have steadily declined, owing in part to goats and plant collectors, but also to climatic conditions that have hampered seedling growth.
