Storm over the Karoo
Witnessing a "Storm over the Karoo" is the most amazing sight to behold. The Karro has always held a special place in my heart. Its big open skies fill me with joy and a sense of peace that is hard to describe.
Capturing this unique fine art print of a " Storm over the Karoo" has been a dream of mine for many years. A serendipitous trip to Mountain Zebra National park meant I was in the right place at the right time.
We spent a few days in this dry parch land that was crying out for rains. And on our last day, the heavens were filled with tumultuous dark clouds, with the sound of thunder, and bolts of lightning that were biblical in nature.
The Smell of African earth filled our senses as the parched lands soaked with hailstones and rains breathed a sigh of relief. Mountain zebra, black wildebeest huddle together with there backs to the stinging rain as the storm raged all around them.
Kaimaans Rive Bridge | Architecture Photo | Garden Route
Construction on the 67km long railway line from George to Knysna commenced in 1924 and the line was officially opened in 1928. Kaimaans River Bridge, 210 meters long and 36 meters high spans the Kaimaans River Estuary, near Wilderness, on the Garden Route. This bridge was used by the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe, the last remaining passenger steam train in Africa, which finally ended operation in June 2009 due to landslides from flooding.

Dune on Fire | Sossusvlei | Canvas Prints | Wall Art
Sometimes photography is about being in the right place at the right time. I call this "opportunistic photography". This was one of those situations. A wind/sand storm was blowing. I stopped the car about 1km in front of Dune 45. I took out my longest lens ,600mm. This gave me a wonderful perspective of the Dune. The dune seemed as it was on fire, as the red Namib sand was whipped into a frenzy. I could only get a handful of photos as the sand was stinging my arms and face. But I was satisfied I had captured that wonderful moment. Later on I returned after the winds had subsided and the dune was cleansed and unblemished. I made a wonderful monochrome photograph called Dune45, light and shadow. It indeed turned out to be a serendipitous afternoon.

"With tree skeletons, hundreds of years old, lost in the middle of the desert, it’s little wonder Deadvlei has been nominated as the 8th Wonder of the World"
Kubu Island | Baobab | Canvas Prints | Wall Art
Kubu is a mystical island that rises out of an ocean-less salt pan. It is a harsh arid environment and one would not expect to see an island of rocks covered in ancient gnarled baobab tress. These Baobabs are thousands of years old and their eerily mis shaped bodies causes ones inner most imagination to run amok.
